Baltimore: The City of Slogans

Baltimore is currently featured in The New Yorker, of all places.

The article is a lighthearted look at our city’s efforts to promote itself. Currently the PR firms are trying to capitalize on John Waters and his two Broadway musicals. An ad to run in the Playbill for Cry-Baby reads, “You’ve seen the musical, now visit the set,” reportedly an attempt to overwrite The Wire’s “gritty” portrayal of Baltimore.

An upcoming section of baltimore.org will even include a John Waters tour of the city, pointing visitors to where he likes to shop and drink. My guess is that most of the tour will take place in Hampden.

Baltimore featured in both Rolling Stone and the New Yorker (and Blender as Anne nearly simultaneously posted) in the same week? Maybe our city on its way to becoming a “tourism mecca” after all.

  1. Baltimore has all the personality of a paper cup.
