Yellow Transportation is replacing their old taxicabs with new Prius hybrids.
Not all of them, mind you — not yet. So far, there are two Priuses accepting fares in Baltimore. Plans call for 20 to be on the road by the end of the year, with an “eventual” replacement of all 600 cabs in Baltimore.
Mayor Dixon was the Prius’s first fare last week (although she was comped) as part of the promotion for Green Week, a variety of events designed to educate citizens about sustainable living.
In response to a reporter’s question to whether she had planned to pick up any passengers in the new Prius, Dixon responded positively but was informed that she would, in fact, need a taxi license do to that. She responded, “Damn,” apparently disappointed in not being able to earn “extra money” — presumably needed to fuel her regular ride, a much-larger Expedition.
Green Week kicks off on Saturday (raindate: Sunday) in Druid Hill Park with Ecofest, featuring music, food, art, and exhibits. There are even online directions for accessing the festival via public transportation.

The mayor is riding in a Prius to educate the city on sustainable living? She went from an Expedition to a Prius? Anybody wanna take a bet on what she’ll be driving after the cameras are gone? She’ll be back rollin’ in the EX looking like another Barksdale crew with Snoop riding shotgun. True dat!
Now if she can only kick down a few more yellow recycling bins for her city we may believe that this is more than PR.
