Excuses, excuses

A Carroll County stay-at-home mom skipped jury duty because she breastfeeds her child, and got her contempt-of-court charges dropped with the same excuse.

For those of you (like me) who are not fans of jury duty, this is a great development. Plenty of women work 9-to-5 while breastfeeding their children. Sure it’s inconvenient, but so is having a child in the first place. So if breastfeeding — a manageable task — becomes a legitimate excuse for dodging jury duty, what else can be claimed as a hardship? The list is never-ending:

  1. Pets: need to be fed/walked/dressed in seasonal costumes, etc.
  2. Blood sugar: must eat every 2.5 hours or risk fainting during cross examination
  3. Unemployed boy/girlfriend: lose a day’s income and will be living on courthouse steps
  4. ADD: will just be thinking about the turtle who smokes throughout entire trial

What else? Due to #4 above, I will let you continue the list, as I am now wondering what brand the tortoise smokes…
