First album

It was the Spring of 1991 and I was in first grade. In the after-school daycare program I was in, an older man (a whole four years older) had a boom box with him and wanted his friends to hear a song on this new tape his parents bought him. I leaned in through the group of kids and listened along with them. It was the best song I had ever heard before! Significantly more powerful than “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and so much better than “Frère Jacques”. It was “Black and White” by Michael Jackson.

I know, i know. But you have to remember this was before the numerous child molestation claims and marriages and he was still respected as an artist. Plus, I was six so give me a break.

I went home and told my mom all about it and how I had to have this tape. My mother, never holding me back, said “Okay” and we went to a Record and Tape Traders. She gave me a few dollars and let me approach the clerk behind the desk to ask for the album.

This tape opened doors to a world I didn’t know existed. I listened to it over and over and when I wanted something new, I listened to the radio and was exposed to Madonna and Vanilla Ice and a bunch of other weird band names that I didn’t understand. It was the start of a life-long love affair with music.

What was the first album you ever bought and why?

  1. This will show my age, but here goes:

This first album I ever bought was "Book of Dreams" by the Steve Miller Band. I bought it from a friend, Donnie Whittington, for three bucks. I thought it was so cool, it had 'Swingtown' and 'Jungle Love' which I had just heard on my new transistor(!) radio. Between the radio and the secondhand turntable my brother and I shared I just couldn't wait to buy an album, ANY album, and Donnie's offer was irresistible. At that point in time, $3 was a bargain when you considered that a new vinyl album (LP's anyone? To play on your 'Hi-Fi'?) was about three times the price.

Looking back, I realize that the songs really were just okay, but heady stuff for a dorky, shy kid who was just beginning to understand the power of music. Alas, the album is long gone, but the memories!

I found later that Donnie was surreptitiously selling off albums from his brother's collection to help finance the purchase of recreational pharmaceuticals of the herbaceous variety...lucky for me, his brother didn't know I had it.

  2. Vinyl: Michael Jackson, Thriller

    Cassette: Madonna, self-titled

CD (and keep in mind that it was 5th grade): New Kids on the Block, self-titled. Which maybe makes it slightly cooler because it was before Hangin' Tough was released and no one knew how lame they were yet

Thankfully I am not quite old enough to have an eight-track purchase to add to that list.

  3. Interestingly enough, it was MJ's Thriller. I was in the 3rd grade I think. I cherished that album. Yes, album...it was vinyl.

First tape was Depeche Mode, People are People....first CD was New Order, Low Life.

First stolen MP3 was Morrissey, Suedehead.

    !

  4. Oh boy, this will stretch a few brain cells. Let me think.

There must be something before this, but the first LP I remember buying is Billy Joel's The Stranger. I already had a bunch of albums by then but I think they were all gifts.

Being a kid, I spent a lot of my disposable income on 45s. The first two I bought were "The Joker" by Steve Miller and "Smokin' in the Boys Room" by Brownsville Station.

My first CD was Dark Side of the Moon. I didn't even own a player yet but I knew that was the first thing I wanted to hear.
