Gimme more

Sometimes I need more details. Today is one of those days.

Reading all the crime stories in our local media can wear one down. Particularly when the story of the Parkville woman who was forced into her home by a stranger and raped is reduced to 53 words. But then there’s the rare person who gives a big middle finger to the criminal with a complete disregard to their own safety, like the woman in the Sun’s police blotter today.

The woman was working at Wireless Solutions at North Charles and Baltimore Streets on Saturday afternoon when a man came in, apparently shopping for a new phone. When he placed it on the counter to buy, he also showed her a handgun and demanded cash from the register. She instead opted to pick up the phone and call 911. The guy (and his gun) got out of there right quick, without any extra money.

That’s certainly not the advisable way to handle a robbery attempt, particularly in this city, but it is rather entertaining.

Does this story — a nonincident — even deserve one word in the paper? You tell me. Personally, what I really want to see is a video reenactment in the style of America’s Most Wanted. Any takers?

  1. Um, maybe the fact that YOU ARE SITTING where our Baltimore County crime reporter used to sit has something to do with the newspaper's "inadequate" coverage.

Don't misinterpret that as an attack on your coverage. I never said it was inadequate. More so, I was saying that there's too much crime and not enough space to talk about it all. Nor do I think anyone wants to read an entire publication about rape and murder and the like. Anyway, none of these stories have yet been reported anywhere but the Sun, as far as I've seen.

  2. While I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment, Lori, I have a major issue with what you've written.

First of all, I made a very similar comment about the same case last week at the Baltimore Crime blog. But I am a blogger, not a journalist. I don't get paid. Blogging is something I do when I'm not doing the work that pays my bills.

I assume (and please correct me if I'm incorrect) that you are a paid member of the "b" staff. As such, this is the work that pays your bills. So rather than sit at your desk and complain about the lack of coverage, why don't you write about the rape? And by "write about," I don't mean "write a snarky blog post." (That's my responsibility, and there's a reason why I don't get paid for it.) I mean pick up the phone, call the BPD or Dick Irwin, find out the details of the rape, walk out to your car, and drive the few blocks from Towson to Parkville so you can investigate. Talk to the woman. Talk to the precinct that is responsible. Find out what's going on. And tell us about it.

Regardless of whether the Sun pays you to be a blogger or a journalist, you're in a position to stir things up. Are you up to the challenge?

  3. One of the nice things about the news is you can get a summary of what is going on in your area without filtering through a bunch of crap.

This is contrary to your blogging, where you have posted 4 entries already today, and have yet to hit a single point worth mentioning. You have poor insight, and quite frankly, the only reporter the Sun is truly wasting money on from what I can tell, is you.

  4. A "non-incident." Got that.

Next time you're alone in a small space (like a cell phone store) two feet away fr/ a stranger with a gun who seems ready to use it, be sure not to bother us about it -- because, by your own standards, that ain't nothin'.

What part of fear don't you understand? You also don't seem to realize a crime was committed when that gun was displayed to attempt a theft. Ask a real reporter to explain it -- if you can get one to talk to you.

  5. taotechuck - Can you post a link to your blog?

  6. To the fan: If you click on taotechuck's name, it links to his blog, http://baltimorecrime.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow">http://baltimorecrime.blogspot.com/

To eo: I'm not saying that having a gun pointed at you is not scary or not a crime, but that woman seemed to be able to diffuse the situation and walked away unharmed. I am saying that being dragged into your house and raped is possibly scarier. I imagine downright frightening for residents of Parkville.

To taotechuck: I'll do my best with the forum I have as a blogger, although real investigative reporting is best left to the experts, I'm told.

To mismolly: What, in your eyes, are the points worth mentioning today? We do want our readers to help drive the conversation.

  7. So the Tribune has laid off reporters and replaced them with hired bloggers to comment on the remaining reporters' inadequacies. That is one pomo business model.

  8. "I am saying that being dragged into your house and raped is possibly scarier."

Possibly? Don't take too hard a stance or anything.

Lori, I am afraid and sort of sorry to say you richly deserve the pummeling you are receiving in the comments. Only the Sun deserves a greater pummeling. Please reconsider your career path because being the stench that comes off the rotting bones of a dying newspaper is nothing to be proud of. "Gimme More" (& "It's Britney, b----") was just a horrible post, everything that is wrong with what you have been asked to do.

If you have the courage, march into your boss's office and say, "This job you have given me is the antithesis of the Sun's mission as a newspaper and I quit." Then call every news outlet you can and make a hero of yourself, which you will be almost certainly rewarded for with a plum entertainment job, preferably far away from a city like Baltimore that is in desperate need of hard-hitting, not glib, reporters to chronicle its myriad ailments and pleasures.

  9. "I'll do my best with the forum I have as a blogger, although real investigative reporting is best left to the experts, I'm told."

You're in a rough position, Lori, and you're playing to a rough crowd. I don't envy the challenges you have before you.

With that said, though, real investigative reporting is not best left to the experts. There have been countless cases of bloggers breaking stories and bloggers being the only ones to cover stories.

Besides, I'm not suggesting that you become the next Bernstein, Woodward, or even the next Simon; I'm simply saying you're in a unique position where you, as a blogger, have an opportunity to get paid to become a positive and influential voice in this city. You have an opportunity to act instead of complain. You have an opportunity to make a difference.

If you don't take that opportunity, then I don't see how you're doing your best with the forum you've been given.

  10. I agree with Taotechuck, so amend my comments that you should get out of Dodge if you want to make a genuine go of it.

  11. WOW I can only stay on a computer for a short while I am handicapped so the position is not one I can maintain for very lone I need my newspaper Maybe you could go out and find a real job and then I will have a better chance of getting my PRINT NEWS

  12. Lori, I am enjoying your questions while you feel out your voice and your place in the local discussion stream.

    Keep typing. I'll keep reading.

  13. does anybody really need another eccentric billionaire ruining another newspaper? can't these fat cats find another hobby?
