Roller girl tryouts are this weekend

I’m a wanna be roller girl…
I’ve been tempted to and teased about trying out to be a Charm City Roller girl. I mean, I’m tough — all 5’2” of me. I play football and snowboard. I’ve been knocked out (even though I did it to myself), and cut my shins open mountain biking. And I have a mean side that could work for me in the rink.
I’ve been thinking of names… Booty Breaker, Captain Chapman, Agression Session. I’m sure there are better ones.
The attraction is simple — it’s a thrill to become a different person for a couple hours and take out your aggression.Plus, is there anything more bad ass than being able say you’re a roller girl?So, in the back of my mind I thought I could swing it. Then I watched the girls in action and I was wrong.
There’s just something about a girl hip-checking me into the side railing that makes me cringe. An elbow to the chest or going splitsville on skates doesn’t seem like something I want to get into.
Guess I’m not as tough as I thought I was. I’m impressed most of girls are actually women — moms, wives and the whole family shebang. It’s amazing. And, I feel like a sissy.
It’s just that kind of pain you see coming I don’t know I could be up for. But maybe you are?If you think you are tough enough tryouts are Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Putty Hill Skateland on Belair Road.I can’t wait to see who shows up.
Season starts May 3.

I’ve lived in Baltimore one year now and my girlfriend and I STILL haven’t caught a Roller Derby outing yet. We need to get with it as fans. We’ll come see the Captain when she laces ‘em up! Go for it!
