$9 hot dogs, gold diggers, polo, Huey Lewis– Top that weekend

Ever pay $9 for a hot dog?

Me either. It’s crazy, but that’s how much they were going for at Land Rover’s America’s Polo Cup in Leesburg, Va. Saturday. I was there (and at the pre-event party) thanks to a friend who got tickets. It was highbrow and so perfect for people watching.

The highlights of the event/and my weekend …

Skydivers, dressed in James Bond(ish) suits, parachuted down to start the party Friday night. Nice entrance. At the party/fashion show there were women in dresses that cost as much as my first car, ambassadors, models and polo players who liked dancing with models.

Of all things, a Delorean was on display and stole the show for the first hour or so of the party. And it wasn’t just any Delorean, but I was told it was the original Back to the Future car. Apparently Huey Lewis and the News brings it on tour with them, and the polo match was a tour stop. Kinda strange, I know.

On to the actual polo match, which almost didn’t happen because of poor field conditions. No one fell off their horse. I was waiting for that. As amazing as the actual sport was, the day was really about socializing and checking out what everyone else was wearing.

There’s something amusing about watching women dressed to impress, most in heels and all, slopping through mud trying to avoid puddles.

They were going to forego the divot stomp, but at the last minute the announcer called us onto field. I’m not going to lie, mashing divots on the infield was what I was most looking forward to the entire weekend. I had imagined a Pretty Woman moment when Julia Roberts, looking all proper, took to the field in heels to repair damage to the turf. Well, it was just like that except I was wearing muck boots covered in mud (at least I was wearing a dress).

USA won 6-2 against Italy.

Then came Huey and the fireworks.

And even though I never ate the $9 hot dog I did end up sitting on a golf cart in a horse barn eating pizza that night.

Not a bad weekend for a jeans-and-T-shirt-girl.

What I learned before I returned back to reality:

Periods in a polo match are called chukkers

Dancing on stage is more fun than it looks

The horses players ride are considered ponies

Huey Lewis and the News has a lot of fans over 40 who like to play air guitar

To all gold diggers: a polo match is a good place to scout

Muck boots come in handy

  1. That was about as interesting as a paperclip.

    Thanks for sharing.

    !

  2. hopefully you avoided the steaming divots!

  3. You are welcome. That's the beauty of a blog. It's like a conversation. Some things you'll like, some you won't. But the next day you forget all about it and try to make a more interesting "paperclip" the next time.

  4. Looking at the Web site (http://www.americaspolocup.com/theevent.php), it feels like the Preakness crowd, minus the infield. I guess I would still be wary of women in big hats.

Here's what I want to see come to Baltimore: polocrosse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polocrosse).

  5. I think YCKTR missed the best part of all: The Delorean!

  6. Dude! You got to see Huey Lewis?! Yer damn right there was a lot of air guitar. I prefer the air trombone for their tunes but the guitar is understandable. Lucky.

  7. Air saxophone, too!

  8. I prefer the skin flute.

    !

  9. Also, from Wikipedia:

DMC Houston announced on July 30, 2007 that the [DeLorean] car would be returning into very limited production (about 20 cars per year) in 2008. [20] The newly produced cars will have a base price of $57,500 and have new stainless steel frames and lighter fiberglass underbodies, with optional extras such as GPS, an enhanced "Stage 2" engine, and possibly a new modern interior. The cars will be made with 80% old parts and the rest new.[21]

  10. I'm not sure how I feel about a DeLorean at 57K, or driving it all regardless of the price, but it sure was cool to look at. Pretty cool Wiki entry!

  11. fyi here are some interesting links about DeLorean

This is cool... in this article owning one is "like 5 percent being a rock star."

  12. I think paperclips are really interesting, actually.

  13. You can do some pretty neat tricks with them so I'm told.

  14. No, but seriously, they really aren't Jordan.

    !

  15. Evan your imagine is hysterical.

YCKTR we need a face with the name.
    Just sayin.

  16. I can't say I have ever paid $9 for a hot dog, althought the $7 for the grilled sausage at RFK (MLS Final last year) came close. Still, the Delorean and the people watching sounded cool. Plus Huey lewis & the News? At a polo match? Certainly more interesting than pointless sarcasm, irrelevant comments and exclamation points used for no apparent reason.

  17. IMHO Kevin, exclamation points rule!

Good story. Never been to a polo match (game?) and I immediately thought of Pretty Woman. I'd have loved to see some snobby dressed-to-impress women stomping on divets and slopping through mud while men were looking for some arm candy.
Huey Lewis and the car would have been a bonus as well.

  18. I love you Kevin! lol

  19. Molly: Rock on! Well put, punctuation with a point. Or should that be a point! (grin)

Alisia: Happy to oblige. Plus, you made me blush...

  20. Oh Kevin, relax. That "alphamale" thing is soooo 80's.

    !

  21. 80s were awesome.

  22. i thought the 80s was all about buffing up, mesh shirts and tiny bike shorts...
