Arenas bailing on the Beltway?

Stop the presses. Gilbert Arenas is talking again.

The outspoken Washington Wizards guard is threatening to leave D.C. if the Wizards’ management does not keep teammate Antawn Jamison in the fold. Arenas, who is expected to opt out of his current deal this summer to pursue more money, has said that he wants to remain in Washington – if the Wizards pay him what he wants, that is.

But on Wednesday, Arenas declared on his highly entertaining blog that he would not resign with the Wizards if they didn’t re-ink Jamison, an impending free agent and Arenas’ teammate for six seasons. In my opinion, the Wizards should listen to Arenas and resign Jamison … and let Arenas walk.

As entertaining and intriguing as Arenas is, he’s a ball hog – granted, he’s a talented ball hog – and the Wizards are better off without him. Washington played well when he was out of the lineup, and Caron Butler and Jamison have shown that they’re All-Star-caliber players, too. The Wizards won’t win with Arenas on board, but if they let him walk and find the right pieces to fit alongside Butler and Jamison, they’ll at least have a shot at making it out of the first round of the playoffs.

It would be sad to see Arenas go, because he is a likeable, funny guy, but at least we’d still be able to follow him on his blog, which really is worth checking out. (Here’s his old blog, which is also priceless.)

  1. Just an update: Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld said at a news conference today that he wants to resign both Arenas and Jamison. We'll see if he's able to pull it off.
