Comedy Classics

The other night, watching TV on my boyfriend’s couch with the dog, I was about to make a “Three Amigos” reference when I remembered something he said the last time I tried to do this, “I’ve never seen that movie.” A travesty! I said, “How have you gone through life never seeing this movie?!” There really is no excuse for it. Luckily, the man was smart enough to buy it and watch it.
“Three Amigos” is a comedy classic. See for yourself:
Here is some of my favorite comedies. If you haven’t seen one of these, do yourself a favor and remedy that immediately:
Young Frankenstein - I still watch this movie every time it’s on TV and it doesn’t get old. Gene Wilder is ridiculously brilliant. The only thing funnier than watching this movie is watching my mom do her best “Putting on the Ritz” impression.
Clue - I remember watching this before I was old enough to get most of the jokes and it was still hilarious. From the different endings to Madeline Kahn being one of the funniest women who has ever lived (”Flames! On the side of my face!”), this is a movie that is very underrated.
A Fish Called Wanda - John Cleese and Kevin Kline. That’s really all you need to know. Even though this isn’t a Monty Python movie, if you like their humor, you’ll really enjoy this. Plus, Michael Palin’s stutter.
Some Like it Hot - There’s something about men playing women that has stayed funny throughout the years. It’s romantic, there’s suspense and it’s down right hysterical. It also has one of the best endings in a movie I’ve ever seen.
A Mighty Wind - Not exactly a classic but give it a few more years and it will be in that category. Anything Christopher Guest does is gold in my eyes, but this is his best with Best in Show in a very close second. It’s the music and stories behind each group that pushes it over the edge. Plus, the soundtrack can stand on its own as a beautifully crafted folk album.
What about you guys? What movies can you watch over and over again and stay funny?

I love that part where a Hare Krishna accosts some poor pedestrian on their way to work, trying to convince them to take a copy of their national newspaper, the 'B', and the pedestrian kicks him in the nuts and shaves his head. Chevy Chase really did a good job with that. Hilarious!

"No! We will not die like dogs. We will fight like lions!"
To add one more on the horizon, I have a buddy in TX who is writing the script for the sequal to the 3 Amigos with origonal members...Shhhh...you'll jinx him if he finds out.

"No one told me we went national."
The B was actually started by the local chapter of Krishna Consciousness, but it has been picked up nationally and is being distributed in airports all over America as we speak

Female Trouble is the best comedy in the history of film if you ask me...
Also, Spaceballs never gets old and always commits me to the couch for the duration whenever it's on.
"Supplies!" That one never gets old.

Editor Tallent and I had a recent discussion about the brilliance of Spaceballs. I thought about putting it on the list but didn't want to put two Mel Brooks' movies on the list.
