Home sick

Going away for the weekend or taking a few weeks for a vacation is nice every now and again, but it’s never quite the same as home sweet home. Usually, by the end of the trip you’re ready to just go home and savor the things that you missed while away. Face it, not every restaurant has Old Bay on hand and it gets tiring to tell everyone you’re from Bawlmer and they reply with, “where?”

I’ve been to New York City a few times, I grew up just an hour outside of Chicago and I’ve even wandered Philadelphia’s streets on occasion. I can say with all honesty and not a hint of sarcasm that I prefer Baltimore. No, seriously.

I know we have our share of problems and I rather lick the streets than get lost driving around the city late at night, but it’s home.

What do you miss most when you’re away from home?

  1. As a transplanted New Yorker, the thing that strikes me about Baltimore is that it doesn't feel so much like a city, as it does a bunch of little towns LOOKING FOR a city. For the most part you know exactly what neighborhood you're in. When you're in New York, the neighborhoods tend to segue one into the other so you have to check the address sometimes to determine where you are.

Even after almost seven years, I miss the grocers on practically every block in New York, the ones with the fruits and vegetables and the flowers for sale out front. Whoops--missed that one? No problem, here comes another one just ahead.

I'd just as soon not know what "I rather lick the streets" means. Is that a local "ism"?

  2. Umm yeah, so Claude...feel free to pack your stuff and head right on back to New York.

Lately it seems like I run into a "Claude" every other day. If the city is so great, why the hell do you people move away from it? Spare us your boring (snore) lametation and simply move back.

And no, that's not a local "ism."

    !

  3. I grew up in St. Louis. Baltimore really reminds me of St. Louis in some ways, which is why I live in Baltimore and drive to Gaithersburg for work. I'd rather lick the streets than have to live in Gaithersburg.
So what do I miss of St. Louis? Definately not the local brew, but I do miss toasted ravoli, Ted Drewes frozen custard, and most of the Cards. Sure Camden Yards is great, but it still ain't my Cards.

  4. What do you guys miss about Baltimore?

  5. I miss crabs and crab cakes. You know Baltimore does them right. It's scary when you see "Maryland style crab cakes" in Florida. You know those puppies don't taste good. And I miss Wawa. They have the best chocolate milk.

  6. there are NO wawas in Towson. seriously. i don't know why but it's hard from going to none when in Bel Air there's like five
