Playlists and festivals

I was listening to WRNR on the drive home last night and got to hear one of the songs I’ve been playing over and over on my itunes, “Jesus, etc.” by Wilco. It’s not even all that recent so I’m not exactly sure why it was on, but that’s the magic of WRNR. Nice way to start my evening.
Sooooooooooooooo
Here’s the top five songs I’ve been slightly obsessing over lately:
1.”Jesus, etc.” - Wilco. Off of “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot”, this song sold me on Wilco. Why didn’t I listen to this band earlier?!
2.”Morning After Midnight” - Adam Green. Off his new album, “Sixes and Sevens” I first heard Adam when he opened for Phantom Planet back in 2004 at the Recher. At first, I thought he was a joke because of the dirty lyrics matched with and old sound coming out of this strange young man shuffling around stage. Then I realized he’s just a genius.
3.”Flashing Lights” - Kanye West. Off of “Graduation”. Yea, I just outed myself as a Kanye fan. I honestly don’t know why I like this song other than it’s catchy and he makes a “Martin” reference, but I suppose that’s good enough.
4.”Apartment Four” - They Might Be Giants. Off of “Here Come the 123s”, my boyfriend put this song on a CD for me and it’s so simple and nerdy I can’t help but love it. Who cares that it’s off of a children’s album?
5.”Ce Jeu” - Yelle. Off of “Pop Up”, the fact that all of the songs are in French will be the last thing that crosses your mind because all of these songs are so addictive and danceable. Plus, it’s fun to put my limited knowledge of the French language to the test and catch certain words. Too bad she doesn’t refer to pineapples or grapefruits because those words I know.
Speaking of Kanye and Wilco, they’ll be at this year’s Virgin Festival in August as well as two of my favorites, Andrew Bird and Gogol Bordello. Lucky for me, b will be there in all our glory.
Where are you going to be this summer?

Virgin Fest and Artscape, assuming (I hope) that I can carve out some time for it. I really want to see Googol Bordello, I understand the live show is not to be missed. Artscape is always an interesting time. I even exhibited a sculpture there some years ago, with two of my colleagues. We did an interactive car sculpture called "Virtual Cruiser". We made it out of a real junked car rigged up with a VCR and viewing goggles. Man, I hadn't thought of that in a long time...
Interesting music list, it got me to thinking about what I have been listening to a lot lately. The results surprised me:
1)"Down The Line" by Jose Gonzalez. The line "Don't let the darkness eat you up" gets me every time. A little edgy but great motivation to survive in a harsh universe.
2) "El Matador" by Los Fabuloso Cadillacs. Argentinian rock with horns, tinged with punk. This song (and the rest of the album 'Chau') is excellent gumbo-making music. Plus the drums and chorus I acn't get out of my head.
3) "Repo Man" by Iggy Pop & the Stooges. This is off of the soundtrack to "Repo Man". I haven't quite figured out what the song might means yet, but the lyrics are gritty and I always have images of Iggy Pop stage diving onto a concrete floor. Good '80's pop/punk. My best friend in high school said that the character Otto, played by Emilio Estevez in the movie, reminded him very much of me. After viewing the beer-can-dumped-on-the-office-floor scene, I had to agree.
4) "El Clavo y La Cruz" by The Plugz. Also on the 'Repo Man' soundtrack. I speak very little Spanish, but I like to sing along with it. It's hard to not like something that sounds like a danceable punk mariachi band.
5) "Monkey Wrench" by Foo Fighters. Real badass crunchy guitar makes this a classic. And how Dave Grohl screams his way through that "One last thing before I quit..." rant at the end w/o seeming to take a breath or bursting a blood vessel, I'll never know. Good sing along if you need to prep for or shake off a hard day.
Marissa, thanks for the po

Kudos on including pride as one the major festivals one could choose to attend.
Interestingly, Pride is one of the last festivals that doesn't force people to drink in an enclosed area (ie. beer garden)

and thanks for the suggestion, i just may do that : ) i love knowing what other people are listening to and getting introduced to bands i wouldn't know otherwise.

Be careful with Wilco, because Yankee Hotel Foxtrot sounds hell of different than their other albums. Especially their stuff immediately after YHF.
And if you like Wilco, give Gomez a listen. Or tell your boyfriend to give you some music from them, I'm sure he knows about Gomez.
Songs for me:
1- WHY? on Alopecia - Fatalist Palmisty
I heard about them on MySpace of all places, and they rock harder than most bands. Or maybe I'm just fond of the college-rock scene. But their imagery in lyrics is phenomenal.
2- She & Him on Volume One - Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?
Or any other song on that album. The songs are so melodic and they are fresh feeling, even though they have a 60's vibe to them. But not Winehouse 60's.
3- Ryan Adams on Easy Tiger - Halloweenhead
This track came out a while ago, and WRNR started to play it almost immediately because it was almost Halloween. It's just so fun, even though it sounds like something you would play on Halloween - dark and forboding.
4- Tinyfolk on Pizza Under The Sun - Do Animals Get Lonely Late At Night?
I found this track after reading about cllct.com in the 10 Spot. You have to hear this song. It's incredibly hokey and something I shouldn't like at all. But it's so innocent!
5- Lo Moda on Gospel Store Front - Ready To Go
And my college/indie sound rears it's head once again with Lo Moda. Hailing from Baltimore, they are really good. Check em.

Marissa:
I Doo like the Foo! I have heard the version you mention, but haven't yet caught up to the album. Right on, it's quite beautiful. 'Home' off of 'Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace' is that way too. Amazing that Dave & Co. can exhibit such delicacy after so much power. Not surprising, I suppose; after all, Dave Grohl actually sang part of 'Baby Got Back' on The Daily Show a while back. Now that's versatility.
boingjones: Okay, you got my attention. Now I HAVE to hear WHY? and La Moda. I'm a sucker for the lyrical imagery. Plus, Gomez. I couldn't get 'How We Operate' out of my head when it first came out.
All: More of "What are you listening to?"; inquiring minds want to know!

Kevin:
Check these sites out for WHY? and Lo Moda:
http://www.myspace.com/lowmoda
http://www.myspace.com/whyanticon
WHY? doesn't have Fatalist Palmistry up on their MySpace, but check out The Hollows, and Gemini (Birthday Song.)
I think you'll enjoy them if you like lyrical imagery. I know Lo Moda is on iTunes, and I bet WHY? is as well.

boingjones:
I did check them out, both good and particularly liked WHY? Right on with the lyrics. Funny and engaging, if sometimes a bit dark. Some of it reminded me of They Might Be Giants as if TMBG had decided to write songs for disgruntled adults instead of Disney. Although I like TMBG too.
Good stuff! Thank you for the links!

boingjones: check out the tinyfolk myspace (http://www.myspace.com/tinyfolksings), as that song's hardly representative of the catalog, though I'm glad you like it. I have a special place in my heart for its hokiness myself.
