Presidential sacrifices

I’ve recently become fascinated by WWII posters, I think because they put everything into perspective. That was a time of sacrifice — money, fuel, food, husbands — and people embraced it for the greater good.

Contrast that with the story in today’s Post about our current president. Many Democrats have been critical of Bush during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, particularly concerning sacrifices. They believe he is not asking our country to give up enough during this time of conflict. In fact, his advice after 9/11 on how to fight terrorism was for Americans to shop. But the president is apparently now trying to lead by example.

In an interview yesterday, Bush told Politico that he gave up golfing in 2003 “in solidarity” with the families of dying soldiers. Said the president: “I don’t want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf.”

Really? I doubt a grieving mother is concerned with whether the president is golfing or instead mountain biking (which Bush has not yet sacrificed in the name of war). It’s really no surprise that the collection of Iraq war posters is nonexistent, is it?

  7. F. Bush:

Now that I have cleaned the screen of all the drink I just sprayed all over it, and wiped my eyes, let me say thank you for posting that link!

I don't think I have laughed so much at something like that since I first saw the "Demotivation" posters at www.despair.com.

Right on target, and if I didn't have a yung'n in the house, a few would be up on my walls. Bravo!
