Rainy day for youth organizations

I’m sure the kids involved in Peer to Peer would argue that it’s a rainy day. But Baltimore City Council doesn’t agree.
Peer to Peer Enterprises — a coalition of student-led organizations — has been looking for funding for awhile now. They asked Dixon for $3 million in next year’s budget to expand their project, but have so far been unsuccessful, even after a few days of protesting outside of City Hall. The money would allow Peer to Peer Enterprises to hire up to 1,000 youths, 10 to 24 years old. The youths would be employed as tutors, coaches, and activity leaders for their peers; an estimated 2,000 to 6,000 students would benefit from their work.
Last night, Baltimore’s city council voted on a proposal to fund the programs ($3 million for Peer to Peer plus an additional $1 million for other organizations) from the city’s “rainy day” fund, which right now totals $88 million. The measure was defeated by a 9-3 vote.
Bill Henry, one of the council members who voted in favor of the funding, said: “At some point, we have to stop the cycle of madness and invest in the generation we have now so that future councils won’t be sitting around dealing with this exact same problem.”
Exactly.
The proposed budget needs to be approved by July 1. It looks unlikely that someone will find a way to fund these programs before then.

Good. We do not need to give our youth the skills and training to be future leaders and educators. Thank GOD they squashed that idea. (Sarcasm)

Looks like the kids are organizing their hunger strike, along with a number of other events starting tomorrow afternoon through Tuesday. http://baltimore.indymedia.org/newswire/display/17357/index.php" rel="nofollow">You can see the full schedule here.

Not a good idea. While I admire their efforts, it only better serves Mayor Dixon and her battle against obesity/Trans-fats. She can now claim victory on both fronts. Ridiculous opportunist.

You know Dave, there are many other posts on this site that would be more appropriate for your wiseass remarks. Now don't get me wrong, I'm the last one to chide someone for being a dip**** - I have a Ph.D. in asshole. But Lori tends to bring us news and information that's pretty important...at least I think so.
Anne Tallent on the other hand...complete drivel...she could use your colorful reframing and response.
Just sayin.

Well YCKTR, your post has no relevance Stone, meet glass house. I commented on the story and gave my opinion of Shelia Dixon, and her inability to see what would be good for the city. You should not concern yourself with the verbiabge I chose to use.
If I did not think Lori's contibution was important I would not have engaged in a discussion about it.

You are correct. Take comfort in the fact that I would never talk to someone like that while face-to-face. I get tough behind a keyboard.
DANG! Now I am off topic! Sorry Lori.

It certainly would be nice to believe our local elected officials have awakened to the understanding they do not control a bottomless money pit courtesy of their constituents.
