Renters may get more notice

Good news for renters whose landlords have stopped paying the mortgage.
A new bill making its way through Baltimore city council will give renters advanced notification of foreclosures affecting them, as well as additional time to relocate. As it stands now, many renters discover their apartment is in foreclosure when the sheriff is standing on their doorstep to evict them.
Under the new law, renters living in foreclosed property would be notified of the foreclosure by both certified and first-class mail at least two weeks prior to the eviction; a notice would also be posted on the property a week in advance.
Also, the new property owner would not be allowed to just toss previous tenants’ belongings into the street. Instead, the same procedure would be followed as under the new law for evictions resulting for nonpayment of rent. The owner would need to take the renter’s property to a landfill, donate it to a charity, or arrange to have the renter collect it.
More than 80 tenants called Baltimore Neighborhoods for help this year because their landlords were facing foreclosure — a 50 percent increase from last year.
