I’m sure the diehard Nine Inch Nails fans already know this, but for anyone else interested in online music at the right price, frontman Trent Reznor released The Slip as a free download today at nin.com.
It’s accompanied by this note from Mr. Reznor: (thank you for your continued and loyal support over the years — this one’s on me).
The music is available in different formats online, including “high quality MP3, FLAC or M4A lossless at CD quality and even higher-than-CD quality 24/96 WAVE,” according to the band’s site, and all downloads include a PDF with artwork and credits.
For the computer haters who want to wait, the nearly 43-minute, 10-track album will be released on CD and vinyl in July. Enjoy.

Coincidentally, I'm listening to it right now. It's more like the NIN you're probably used to than Ghosts I-IV is. (Not that I had a complaint about Ghosts; quite the contrary.) So far I'm enjoying it.
The bad news is, with the artwork, etc. relegated to a PDF file, you don't get the wallpaper goodies that you got from the Ghosts downloads unless you're especially determined.

I'm not really a fan, so I didn't download it. I might give them a chance at some point. There's no risk if you don't like it. So that's great marketing. If its true that musicians make their money through concerts (mostly because labels and their bloated staff eat up that money?), then it's really a pretty good idea.
