Zappa monument for Baltimore

A sculpture of Frank Zappa may soon find a home in Baltimore.
Zappa, a native of Baltimore, is apparently big in Lithuania. A group of artists there have already built a monument to Zappa in their country’s capital of Vilnius, even though the musician had no ties to their homeland. Now, they’ve created a replica and would like to give it to Baltimore.
The mayor of Vilnius has sent a letter to our Mayor Dixon. He wrote: “I hope that replication of the original statue of Frank Zappa in Vilnius and bringing it to Baltimore will perpetuate the memory of one of the greatest artists of the [20th] century.”
The Lithuanians are not asking for anything in return. The cost of creating and shipping the bust (around $50,000) will be covered by them. Baltimore would only have to decide on a location and pay for installation costs. Mayor Dixon reportedly as no objections to the plan (after all, she did name August 9 as “Frank Zappa Day”). The final decision is in the hands of the public art commission, however.
[UPDATE (9:47 p.m.): The public arts commission has approved the sculpture, although they have not yet decided on a site. A commemorative concert is also being considered for its unveiling, a la F Bush’s suggestion below.)
Any thoughts on where you’d like to see the sculpture?

AWESOME!! This is some of the coolest news I've heard all day. Yea, why does Vilnius have a statue but not Baltimore? And when did mayor Dixon name 8/9/ Frank Zappa Day? I missed that. That's another holiday I can take off to celebrate.

8/9 was named Zappa Day when Zappa Plays Zappa was in town last year at the Rams Head. Awesome show by the way. I've seen them three times. They'll be through the area again this year.
I'd gladly display the monument in my front yard along Bellona Avenue. Maybe they could display it in the MICA area and have Zappa Plays Zappa at Artscape. That would be cool.

Great Idea. Maybe Dwezil and Co can come back a play a set when the bust gets put up. And I thought Philly's Hall & Oats Day was pretty cool. Ours is better!. Yea us!
But I don't think it should be displayed in a large area. You should have to look for it. Kind like the music. It was always there but you had to really get into it to find it. That's just my opinion. MICA would be cool or near some crazy-ass sculptures around town.

My friend tells me he lived in Federal Hill back in the 70's when the Zappa Crappa was done. Perhaps Federal Hill, although Fells Point would seem more appropriate. The family lived over on Park Heights. Don't think the area is too safe now.
If they really wanted to get it right they might put it outside the Meyerhoff and have the BSO play one of his classical pieces.

The BSO might be up for that. If you've seen http://www.bsomusic.org/main.taf?p=1,17" rel="nofollow">their summer schedule, it includes Zeppelin, the Dead, and a night devoted to music from video games.

Zappa's classical pieces are pretty intricate. I think the last time the BSO did a Zappa piece was under the direction of David Zinman. I know the Zappa family is always happy to have his pieces performed. They're not too happy about cover bands like Project Object and such, but they do support his classical pieces being performed.
I was actually considering going to the Dead show since Stella Blue will be performed. My daughter is named Stella.

I was at the 1995 unveiling in Vilnius, Lithuania.
I have to say that the people behind this, The Zappa Club of Lithuania were/are an extra-ordinary bunch of artists and poets. They managed to get this iconic monument installed in a better place than they possibly hoped, after the original location at the outskirts of Vilnius was blackballed, There are a few appalling sculptural depictions of FZ in the world, but this one that I hope the people of Baltimore take willingly is a masterpiece, by a fine master craftman..working from his medieval studio, just like an alchemist.

Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar!
All props to Willie Don, but a Frank Zappa sculpture would be a real Freak Out! and more exciting than Hizzoner, at least to this music fan. I agree with DB it should be somewhere you have to look for it, just like the music (park it in Joe's Garage, perhaps?). Consider the hipster factor, as well as the tourism angle. I'd rather have it here than move it to Montana soon (gonna be a dental floss tycoon...)
And every year on his birthday, we could all gather and Sheik Yerbouti!

they should install it on the block, so on every frank zappa day people could gather for titties and beer.

This is a disgusting idea. I hope the good people of Baltimore come to their senses and ban this statue. Frank Zappa set a terrible example for children and deserves nothing but out contempt, not this sycophantic worship of a drugged out has been.

Poor Hill44ary, what drugs are you referring to; his chemotherapy?
Zappa set an excellent example for children, and people that dig his music are generally well educated and thoughtful people. The only drugs you can accuse him was too many cigarettes, he was wrong about that

Zappa was always an outspoken advocate against drug use and never did hard drugs (in his bio he claimed he tried pot a handful of times; other have claimed he didn't even know what hash was when he saw it).
He was also arguably the pre-eminent modern composer of the latter half of the 20th century. And he was an original thinker and iconoclast.
Baltimore would do well to honor this man!

Spoken like a true Hillbot Hill44. Keep supporting Shrillary even though Obama has won this thing and the Republicans will get control of your vagina and every other womans.
Zappa was against drugs, but he was for the first amendment. Perhaps you might try listening to some of his classical music. Might I suggest the Yellow Shark or the London Symphony Orchestra recording.

Not to pile on, but I'm not sure it makes sense use the phrase "has-been" to refer to someone who's dead. Is Mencken a "has-been" because he hasn't written anything in a few years?
I've never been a superfan of Frank Zappa like some of the folks here, but I do appreciate his music and his marvelous way of turning a phrase, mixing the mundane with the profane and giving it a catchy pop hook besides.
He'd probably appreciate placing it somewhere on The Block, but even though Park Heights isn't what it used to be, installing it there could be the first step in a revitalization effort.

lest we forget, the baltimore monument of frank zappa should be installed on a fractured stone base representing tipper gore's PMRC. maybe we could commission a statue of tipper gore reaching out from the wreckage.
