Baltimore schools try to involve parents

Baltimore City schools will soon be implementing a new program to get parents more involved in their child’s education.
The school system will spend $1 million next academic year (about half of which is expected to be grant money) on the program. A “community-based organization” will be contracted to get parents active and form PTAs in the schools that lack them. (Only about 50 of the 192 schools in the system currently have PTAs.) PTA representatives would then evaluate their principal and give feedback on the school’s budget to the city school’s chief.
Parents will also be given access to a website, allowing them to monitor their child’s grades and homework assignments. In addition, courses will be offered this summer to parents of new middle- and high-school students, telling them what to expect in the new schools.
Although these are great steps for Baltimore’s school system, it seems to be that “mobilizing” some of the parents may be a big challenge. Said Michael Sarbanes (son of Senator Paul and brother of Representative John), who was hired to coordinate the initiative: “[W]e’ve got a ton of work to do.”
The program seems to take on a lot in its first year, but those of you working in the schools know best. Is the plan overambitious, or a good first step toward fixing a fundamental problem?

Only about 1/3 third of Baltimore schools have PTA's? I didn't know that. I wish my school could get a grant to get parents involved. It seems that PTA's are something that parents inheritly desire for their children. It would be interesting to see how schools get uninvolved parents involved. That may be harder than getting students involved. I do hope it works though.

A website so that parents can monitor their child's grades? Yeah, that'd be great if everyone had a computer. I'm glad these people have actually researched how these families actually live. Morons.
Otherwise I think it is a good plan - at least they're looking in the right direction. Their efforts certainly can't hurt at this point.

Maybe if we could design an internet ready crack pipe.
Seriously though getting these parents involved is going to be really hard because you have to find them first. You'd be amazed at the number of children in Baltimore city who are abandoned by their parents. They are then raised by Aunts or Grandmothers who are already overwhelmed enough.

It's true - that's why why "baby booking" exists. Usually under-age kids are released to thier parents when they get arrested. In Baltimore they can rarely find the parents, so they have to hold the kids somewhere.
It's sad.
BTW Woodchuck, do you have to be a douchebag ALL the time? Even I take a break sometimes. I love how you think you're so much better than anyone who shows some sign of weakness. I joke about it...but I think you REALLY believe it. What we would find if we paged through your life a little? A skeleton or two I'm sure...probably an effin' graveyard.
