O’Malley on the road again

Governor O’Malley is off again — traveling out of state for the third time in as many weeks, all to spread the word about Maryland.

This time, he’ll be attending the BIO International convention in sunny San Diego to “re-establish Maryland’s leadership role and ascendancy as a powerhouse of the bioscience economy in the world today.” Comptroller Peter Franchot will be joining him at the convention.

Today O’Malley will meet with some business prospects, and tomorrow with 20 CEOs of Maryland companies. Our state has 50 companies exhibiting at the convention — already making it one of the most represented states there, without O’Malley’s assistance.

In fact, a study prepared for Franchot determined that Maryland may actually have the nation’s largest bioscience sector. Despite that, O’Malley was in North Carolina last week to look at their success in developing a bioscience industry. And three weeks ago, O’Malley was in Israel, trying to lure some of their biotech companies to Maryland. He did.

Between Johns Hopkins, the University of Maryland, and private industry, it seems like the bioscience sector is one area where Maryland is actually thriving. So my question to you: should O’Malley continue these trips and his new initiative, or instead spend some time at home to concentrate on some of our more fundamental problems?

  1. So we are sending the Governor on trips to boost an industry that is already thriving? Is this what our tax increase was for? Trips to Ireland/San Diego/God knows where else? Meanwhile, how's that Thorton funding coming along?
