Siphoning gas - gross and dangerous but it’s happening

The last time I saw anyone siphoning gas was when my dad was taking fuel from the car for lawnmower when I was a kid. Apparently it’s happening all the time now.

I have one friend who swears when they park at a certain location they have less gas when they go back to their car. I have no idea if the gas is truly being stolen, but I wouldn’t put it past someone.

I do know there have been reports of stolen gas around the country — even some stories of people stealing used oil outside fast food restaurants. And people, particularly thieves, see fuel as liquid gold right now.

With a little checking around I found plenty of videos on the Internet teaching people ways to perfect your siphoning skill. And if you think you are safe because you have a newer car with a valve by the gas cap, think again. There are videos that show you how to get around that also.

It’s a pretty disgusting process if you don’t time it right and get a mouthful of gasoline - and it’s dangerous. There was a story a couple weeks ago about someone catching on fire while attempting to swipe someone’s gasoline from their car.

Unbelievable.

Are we going to have to back to the days where people had to lock their gas tanks?

I might start driving a moped.

  1. Ride your bike. One less car. I wish I could ride my bike to work, but the distance (and hours) make that almost impossible. Apartment lease is up in nine months though...

  2. We're gonna be living in the Mad Max world pretty soon. Get a locking gas cap. Pain in the ass but pays for itself quickly.

  3. Who Run Barter Town!?

  4. I'd love to ride my bike, too. 695 isn't the greatest place to be pedaling though.
I've seen locks for 25 bucks.

  5. The funny thing is gonna be when you guys all proudly go out and buy your gas locks only to find they punched a hole in the bottom of your tank and drained it out the bottom. And yes they do that as well. DOH

  6. In the 70's I remember the lines coming out of gas stations. A friend who worked in a gas station at the time told me that one time some guy cut his car into a line when there was a little break in the line. A guy futher back got out of his car and proceeded to walk up and put his locking gas cap on the guys car and then drove away. The other guy couldn't get the cap off and was completetly screwed. Good times!

  7. Woodchuck312 - Yep, I read all about that, too. I would never get a lock, but it does at least seem like the thief would move onto the next car that doesn't have one.

BTW - We ran a story about Mexico keeping fuel prices low through government subsidies. Interesting. AP reported on folks going across the border to fill up on gas that was less than $3/gallon.

  8. It's time to face the facts:
Marijuana can produce several different kinds of fuel. In the 1800's and 1900's hempseed oil was the primary source of fuel in the United States and was commonly used for lamps and other oil energy needs. The diesel engine was originally designed to run on marijuana oil because Rudolf Diesel assumed that it would be the most common fuel. Marijuana is also the most efficient plant for the production of methanol. It is estimated that, in one form or another, marijuana grown in the United States could provide up to ninety percent of the nation's entire energy needs.

Hemp is 4 times more efficient than corn as biofuel. Hemp pellets can be used to produce clean electricity.

... so powerful it could replace every type of fossil fuel energy product (oil, coal, and natural gas).

... This plant is the earth's number one biomass resource or fastest growing annual plant for agriculture on a worldwide basis, producing up to 14 tons per acre. This is the only biomass source available that is capable of producing all the energy needs of the U.S. and the world...

Hemp will produce cleaner air and reduce greenhouse gases. When biomass fuel burns, it produces CO2 (the major cause of the greenhouse effect), the same as fossil fuel; but during the growth cycle of the plant, photosynthesis removes as much CO2 from the air as burning the biomass adds, so hemp actually cleans the atmosphere. After the first cycle there is no further loading to the atmosphere...

  9. Yes...and hemp will always be your friend, never forgets to call pn your birthday, cleans your bathroom, picks up your dry cleaning, and automatically hates all of your ex-boyfriends.

READ the articles on the website... you might learn something but I never said it "will always be your friend, never forgets to call on your birthday, cleans your bathroom, picks up your dry cleaning, and automatically hates all of your ex-boyfriends."
