Towson to become more “walkable”

Drivers and pedestrians alike will see some changes in downtown Towson, starting tonight.
The often-dreaded Towson circle will be permanently reduced to a single lane in some parts — between southbound York Road and eastbound Joppa Road, as well as at the entrance from Allegheny Avenue and the exit to eastbound Joppa Road. The changes are meant to reduce speed and confusion, plus make the crossings safer for pedestrians. Work is expected to be completed by Wednesday.
York Road will also lose a lane. Three blocks between the roundabout and Towsontown Boulevard will be converted to parking spaces — another effort to slow traffic and also provide easier pedestrian access to businesses.
The overly enthusiastic director of the Towson Chamber of Commerce said of the project: “We can’t stand ourselves, we are so excited.”
This is the first step of the “Walkable Towson” program, designed to make the area more inviting to pedestrians, while encouraging drivers to bypass downtown by using alternate routes. So my only question is: how are the pedestrians from elsewhere supposed to get to downtown Towson? There’s certainly no viable public transportation option — unless you have a few hours to kill.

The streets in Towson aren't that bad for pedestrians. Learn how to use the crosswalks and look both ways and you'll be fine. The only time there's ever accidents is when pedestrians think that the little glowing white man on the walk sign is a shield of invincibility.
OK, I'm done with my rant now.

i know how to use it, and you may know how to use it, but the majority of idiots who drive thru there every day have NO CLUE!!!!

Funny...everyone CLAIMS to know how to navigate the roundabout...yet it's still consistently dysfunction junction.

funny, I thought the little glowing white man was in conjunction with the green light that signals pedestrians across. Not to mention that few drivers recognize that pedestrians have the right of way at intersections whether marked with a crosswalk/light or not, they are to treat the pedestrian with the right of way. So many people assume when they get their license and car they can run all over the place... like the car is their "shield of invincibility."
As for the Towson roundabout... I guarantee that in less than 5 years we'll hear people wanting it restored to how it is/soon to be was due to traffic congestion.

(NotMarky)Mark,
I'm all for pedestrians having the right away. I'm just saying that people also need to pay more attention when they cross the street, too. I think both parties are at fault on this one.
And, as a former Towson resident, I don't think the situation is that bad honestly.
