We’ve got it covered

My brother who is getting married in October has put me in charge of the music for the reception. I’m supposed to pick four hours worth of songs, big task. I asked him to send me a list of some definite songs he wants to hear and he did just that. I check the email the other day and included was “And we both want Jonathan Coulton’s cover of ‘Baby Got Back’”

Not exactly the most romantic song, but it’s his day. He sends me a link to the song and I must have listened to it five or six times in the course of a few hours. If you ignore most of the lyrics, it’s actually beautiful. Judge for yourself:

In honor of my brother, Jonathan Coulton and well done cover songs, here are some of my favorites you may not know about:

“Nothing But Flowers” - Guster (originally Talking Heads): I had to put Guster in a blog at some point, being my favorite band and all. This song is on their “Guster on Ice” DVD/CD which is a recording of a show they did a few years back. Upbeat, catchy, great for driving with the windows down kind of music. Then again, all Guster songs are.

“Easy” - Faith No More (originally Commodores): For those of you hesitant to even listen to this song because you don’t like Faith No More or hard rock (shame on you!), you’ll be changing your tune…no pun intended. It’s supposed to be somewhat of a somber song, but the music is so laid back and, dare I say, easy going. If you like this song, try checking out Mike Patton’s other projects like Mr. Bungle, Peeping Tom, Lovage (which has a cover of Sex (I’m a) which you definitely need to give a listen) and The Dillinger Escape Plan.

“Toxic” - Yael Naim (originally Britney Spears): Get over the fact that it’s Britney and then you can embrace this song. Yael Naim’s voice is a unique mixture of French and Israeli and is paired with the piano making this song perfect. You may recognize her sound from a Mac commercial earlier this year which used her song “New Soul”.

“Hey Ya” - Mat Weddle (originally Outkast): This perpetuates my theory of an acoustic guitar can make any song better. This song is great on its own and you can appreciate it even if you hate the original or have never heard. Mat’s voice is gorgeous and just a little strange to hear coming out of a guy who looks like Grizzly Adams. Enjoy!

If you want to more great covers, go to the video section to see some honorably mentions.

  1. I dig the Faith No More cover of Easy (like Sunday mornin'). But isn't that a breakup song? Probably good for a second marriage. Maybe we're all just getting ahead of ourselves. I'll be playing it for my second marriage

  2. it IS a break up song, hence somber mood. but it's still great.

  3. "This perpetuates my theory of an acoustic guitar can make any song better."

Yeah. I think we need to have a little talk. =)

  4. does that mean you agree or am i in for a heated debate?

  5. :P Thats all I have to say.

  6. Aaaand YouTube is making me look bad by not loading my video. Grrr.

  7. Sad. Beautiful. Funny. I actually burst out laughing. Eerie, too, because just this weekend I was looking up the lyrics in preparation for burning my greatest dance mix CD! Better than the acoustic version of "Boyz-n-the-Hood" by Dynamite Hack, although I give them credit for the Beatles' melody at the end of it.

Michael Hedges does a great acoustic version of "A Love Bizarre" (Sheila E./Prince) on his 'Live On The Double Planet' album. I saw him perform it live as well, and it was excellent.

If you are looking for some covers that combine silliness with kick-ass polka musicianship, check out Brave Combo (www.brave.com/bo). They do a version of 'People Are Strange' (The Doors) and of 'Purple Haze' (Jimi Hendrix). They also have a take on a Christmas tune, the 'O Holy Night Cha-Cha-Cha'. My moms even liked that one, although she did say it wasn't very traditional.

Polka: it isn't as square as you think!

  8. Bawlmer trivia: Laura Lippman is a Brave Combo fan. Cool!

  9. i hear polka and think of weird al

  10. Marissa:

I know, I know, Weird Al made it hard to think of polka as anything but silly/stupid. Funny, but unhip. It was a live performance by Brave Combo at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival a few years ago, that opened my ears to the 'possibilities of polka' as they said. I didn't make it to the dance tent that year, but anecdotally I heard they really rocked the joint until about 2 a.m.

They take the form seriously, but not so seriously that you can't have fun with it. I can highly recommend their 'Musical Varieties' album. Good, goofy party music if nothing else!
