Congressman wants investigation of big oil companies

In response to the nation’s rising gas prices, Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger will present the Energy Fraud, Fairness and Reform Act to Congress today. Under Ruppersberger’s proposal, big oil companies will be investigated to determine if they are intentionally defrauding consumers.

Said Ruppersberger: “With oil companies posting record profits, there’s too much temptation for fraud and abuse unless we have vigilant government watchdogs looking out for consumers. The marketplace has gotten out of balance, and the laws of supply and demand are being manipulated by speculators.”

It’s admittedly been awhile since I cracked open an economics textbook, but I have to wonder if the market is out of balance because Americans continue to demand oil (a nonrenewable resource, remember?) with no regard to its limited and depleting supply. In any case, I guess a fraud investigation can’t hurt.

The study will investigate whether companies are intentionally not building new oil refineries in order to keep consumer prices high, as well as if they have taken federal money earmarked for exploration and done nothing with it.

The Act would also give tax breaks to drivers of hybrid vehicles. Ruppersberger recently bought himself a hybrid GMC Yukon. Explaining his choice of an SUV instead of a smaller hybrid, Ruppersberger said: “…I’ve had an SUV the past 15 years. I’m a big guy, I’m on the road in a lot of bad weather, and it’s a functional vehicle for me.”

Results of the investigation are not expected until late fall. By then, who knows how much a gallon of gasoline will cost. In the meantime, will additional tax breaks encourage you to buy a hybrid? Or are you holding out hope that the high prices are all big oil’s fault?

  1. I'd love to see the great nothing that happens here.

  2. When you go Dutch, you pay. I remember seeing him and his staff at Paodia Station when he ran for County exec many years ago. Thye were making all kind of sexual references to the waitress. I've always found him to be a bit of a scumbag.

That being said Dutchy Boy... My Subaru handles just fine in the RAIN. While it's not a hybrid, I'm sure many of the smaller hybrids handle just as well in the RAIN. And I stress RAIN because that's all we ever get around here. And it it does snow the Federal Govt in DC always shuts down. Dutch is a real f-ing azz clown

  3. meant Padonia Station by the way.

  4. Wow his ass is so big he needs a Yukon. Kind of reminds me of the humans in the Wall-e movie. I guess he never thought the solution to his fat ass was a diet instead of a larger vehicle.

  5. You know, this guy is just playing to the voters, the Dems who are wondering what he has been doing for the last couple of years. He just needs his name in the news. Why aren't they, who is they? Not the oil companies. It's your neighborhoods and City governments that will not allow anyone to come and build an oil refinery. What piece of shoreline is available? And its been 30 years since the last one was completed. Too many restrictions that run the cost up to make it not possible. Remember, These Oil companies are owned by you and me, stock holders. Not the Getty family anymore. They can't loose billions, they have to make billions. That is what Business is about. Plus, for an oil company to make 7 cents per gallon, doesn't sound like much to me. They are just selling lots of gallons. So go buy stock in Exxon or Shell.
