Get your fill of science fiction flicks

It was probably all the “Star Trek” my mom and brother forced me to watch as a kid that turned me onto sci-fi. This other world or dimension that was similar to ours except for one factor: anything could happen. Weird monsters taking over the world? Sure, why not? People traveling through time? Well, of course, don’t you? You had to completely forget all of the logical rules you knew and accept new ones.
Even earlier than “Star Trek”, I remember watching “Back to the Future.” I couldn’t have been more than four-years-old, watching Marty McFly travel through time, wishing I was in that DeLorean with him, though mostly it was because I was in love with Michael J. Fox. But that’s neither here nor there. I loved that if there was something wrong, he was able to fix it with Doc Brown’s handy dandy time machine.
Where we’re going, we don’t need roads. Well, maybe some popcorn to enjoy the rest of the list:
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb - Hilarious still to this day, which is a hard feat for a movie about starting a nuclear holocaust. Peter Sellers is perfect in all three of his roles.
The Fifth Element - There’s action, comedy, romance and a really odd performance by Gary Oldman with some weird hat thing. The concept was interesting, Milla Jovovich was hot and kicked ass while barely speaking English. The special effects and scenery were amazing and FUN FACT: the costumes were designed by famous French designer Jean-Paul Gaultier.
Donnie Darko - I had to watch this movie three times before I thought I had a grasp on what it was about. Truth is, I’m still not entirely sure. I like movies with non-happy endings and where I can make my own assumptions of how things end up. Did all of it really ever happen? Pre-”Brokeback Mountain” Jake Gyllenhaal was incredible, especially since this was one of his first films. Anyone else creeped out by Frank the rabbit?
12 Monkeys - Terry Gilliam’s best movie (in my opinion) and one of Brad Pitt’s best roles. For anyone who thought he’s just a pretty boy, this will turn them around. I love how you weren’t exactly sure who was sane and who was nuts during most of the movie, probably how Bruce Willis’ character felt being thrown into several years in the past. Sad ending, good message…I think I’ll go re-watch this.

Decent list considering it (by design?) stays away from legends like Star Wars (saga) and the Day the Earth Stood Still.
12 Monkeys? HORRIBLE film. Horrible. Could not stand it. I've never seen it all the way through as I eaither a)get bored or b)fall asleep. I honestly think people were just so far up Brad Pitt's ass, in addition to Bruce Willis in the midst of a comeback, when this came out that they felt like they HAD to like it.
