If you’ve ever heard a song by the Dave Matthews Band, you know that their saxophone player was one of the most distinctive and important parts of their sound. That sax player, LeRoi Moore, has died at the age of 46.

In a statement on it’s website, the Dave Matthews Band writes:

“We are deeply saddened that LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2008, at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Virginia. LeRoi had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program.”

Moore helped compose some of the band’s biggest hits, according to Matthews. The Associated Press reports it was Moore who really put the band together in the first place.

News about Moore’s death broke last night. It was a shock to anyone who had been following his condition because he was reportedly doing fine after his June ATV accident.

The band played on without Moore last night in Los Angeles. According to the AFP, they said Moore had “given up his ghost today” and that they will “miss him forever.”

  1. Sad to see a young man die. ATV's are pretty dangerous. My cousin's husbands father died after a crash a few months ago.

Not a big fan of DMB. His music sounds like Sting's garbage after he left the Police. Very boring!

Doesn't appear that any shows are cancelled as a result of his death according to the web site. Pretty Bush League as far as I'm concerned. Even more reason for me to find DM repugnant!

  2. dude, he died suddenly. I think rescheduling those concerts is happening now... a lot of sites don't have webmasters that update info right away... if there's any updating to the schedule of note, yet. The hosting arena/club/whatever is probably finding the best new date now. It's forgiveable that the site isn't updated.

I'm, also, not the biggest DMB fan. Mid-90's I liked them but then they seemed to explode and it was the trendy thing to do... and people have this personal relationship with Dave... it's cultish and scary.

But the world has lost a great musicion... and that's sad.

  3. Agreed he was a good musician. I was at Jazz Fest a number of years ago and DMB played (Did not see them, opted for local NOLA music instead). My buddy and I were on the elevator at the Inn on Bourbon Street the next day and some girls got on and told us that the drummer for DMB was passed out naked in their tub.

  4. Sorry to hear that LeRoi has passed on. He was an important part of the band's sound. As a fan of DMB, I want to commemt on some of the above comments. Vince, Dave Matthews is repugnant because the has yet to cancel any concerts? Most likely the band's management is trying to make arrangements to reschedule any affected concerts.
Why should they announce anything until everything's finalized. As for only1's comments about the cult of personality surrounding Dave, it's no different than the one that surrounded Jerry Garcia or Phish.

  5. What are you smoking? Dave Matthews isn't even on the same planet as Jerry Garcia. Not even close. Even on Dave's best day.
