Everyone knows the music makes the movie

There have been several instances where I’ve been introduced to some great tunes thanks to a movie I was watching. Not necessarily movie theme songs a la “My Heart Will Go On”, more like a really good choice on the director’s (or whoever) part to include some rockin’ music. Way back in the day before computers were in every house hold, burning CDs was unheard of and you made mix tapes by painstakingly listening to the radio, I had a children’s tape player with a microphone. I never wanted to be a singer, just a DJ. If I heard a song I liked, I would hold the red mic up to the TV and record the song. Such was the case for “Twist and Shout” in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. Oh man, I danced my little kiddie butt off to that song. It was my introduction to The Beatles.

Ready….ACTION!In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel: Not only is this one of the best songs ever, one of the most romantic songs ever, but it was in one of my favorite movies ever, “Say Anything”. Such an iconic scene, Lloyd Dobler holding up the stereo trying to get back Diane. It’s a case where one has to wonder if the scene would’ve been the same if it was a different song. I doubt it.

Where is My Mind - The Pixies: I hadn’t heard any Pixies songs before I saw “Fight Club” unfortunately, so thank God I have a crush on Edward Norton and watched it. The movie didn’t really have much music in it, making the final scene/song that more shocking. Of course, the song title and plot go together like peas and carrots. Right on.

Dry the Rain - The Beta Band: Not to follow a pattern or anything, but here we go with another John Cusak movie. “High Fidelity” was smattered with musical references and songs, this was the only that made me, and everyone in Championship Vinyl, stop and listen. Well done, Rob Gordon, you made me get the song.

These Days - Nico: “The Royal Tannenbaums” had such great classic rock songs in it. This song made the moment between Margot and Richie so poignant and sweet. I love it, and Nico’s voice is so unique. A great addition to an otherwise fantastic movie.
