The can’t-miss weekend sports list

The Olympics are finally over, and while they were a blast while they lasted, it’s nice that we can get back to our usual sleeping patterns and focus on football. With the college season kicking off this weekend and the start of the NFL season just around the corner, it’s going to be all football, all the time, over the next couple months. You better get your remote control ready.

3. #3 USC vs. Virginia (Saturday @ 3:30 p.m. on ABC): USC, my national championship pick this season, makes its highly anticipated debut in Charlottesville against the Cavaliers. This game probably won’t be close, but it will be a lot of fun to watch the athletic Trojans run all over the place as they run up the score.

2. Appalachian State vs. #7 LSU (Saturday @ 5 p.m. on ESPN): In what I think may be the first ever matchup between the defending Div. I-A and I-AA champions (forget those lame FCS and FBS distinctions), the App. State Mountaineers will be looking to pull off another magical upset of a Div. I-A foe like they did last year when they shook the college football landscape with a shocking upset of Michigan. Don’t hold your breath while waiting for a similar encore performance.

1. #20 Illinois vs. #6 Missouri (Saturday @ 8:30 p.m. on ESPN): In the marquee matchup of college football’s opening weekend, Illinois and Missouri, two surprising teams from last season, take the field under the lights on ESPN. My pick: Juice Williams and the Illini knock off the Tigers for the upset.

  1. Where's the love for Delaware v. Marlyand, right here in MD?
