Boller’s future with Ravens up in air

Ravens Quarterback Kyle Boller has been placed on the injured reserve and it could have career implications, according to the Associated Press.
Just a half-hour ago, the AP reported that because Boller is in the final year of his contract, the season-ending injury could mean he’s put on a Ravens jersey for the last time.
You’ll recall Boller hurt his shoulder just two games into Baltimore’s preseason and hasn’t played since.
According to the AP article, “Coach John Harbaugh described the injury as either a torn labrum or other damage that would render Boller unable to play this year.”
This is not really unexpected news, but it is serious news. The Ravens are now in the market for a new QB, given the fact that their only other backup — Troy Smith — just can’t seem to get healthy from his battle with infected tonsils.
Who should the Ravens be after?

The Ravens already signed journeyman QB Todd Bouman to take his place on the roster.
And as for whether he returns to the Ravens for the 2009 season, it should be noted he signed a one-year contract (at a pretty reasonable salary) this summer to stay in Baltimore, so he could be looking to remain in town next year, too.
The question is, do the Ravens want him back?

Yeah, but Bouman was kind of like just picking up someone just to fill the spot. He probably came pretty cheap, though you'd know better than I.
I meant a real backup. Someone who you KNOW could perform well in a game situation.
But, then again, I guess we don't know for sure how Flacco will perform in a big-time game either on the NFL level.

Troy Smith will be the backup once he puts some weight back on, if he isn't the starter. Obviously, Joe Flacco would have to falter for that to happen, but the Ravens see those two as the guys to lead the team this year. Smith probably would have started had he not gotten so ill.
Bouman is a veteran guy who will be the third QB. He'll be the primary backup until Smith is good to go.
It doesn't make sense for the Ravens to bring in a QB with a bigger name like you suggest. Ozzie Newsome knows this isn't a playoff team. The Ravens are rebuilding this year. So they don't need to waste the money on someone like Daunte Culpepper, especially when it could stunt the growth of Flacco and Smith.
It's tough to swallow, people, but this is going to be an ugly football season in Baltimore. But the Ravens know what they're doing, and brighter days lie ahead.
