Finally, after months of waiting, the promised BGE rebate has arrived on just over a million Marylanders’ September bills.
If you log in to your account on BGE.com or look on your bill this month, you’ll see the one-time credit of $170.
As The Sun reports, the credits are part of a $2 billion settlement that state lawmakers approved to resolve a dispute with the energy company.
Hmm… thanks?
We’re paying 85% more now than we were in 1999 when deregulation was passed. This is apparently supposed to quell any concerns about whether we’re paying too much for energy.
Actual translation: BGE’s parent company, Constellation, took a plea deal by offering this “break” to its customers. Sure, Constellation is paying out a total of $187 million, but they are getting a far sweeter deal. The state has agreed to drop an investigation into a total of $1 billion that customers paid to Constellation for taking over BGE’s power plants.
Constellation is basically saying, “We’ve been raping your wallets for 9 years, so here’s a month free.” Gee, aren’t you generous?
How about some real energy policy to get rid of this costly — both monetarily and environmentally — form of energy? But, that’s a topic for another post.
