Flacco to start in season opener

The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Joe Flacco will be the Ravens’ starting quarterback in Sunday’s season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. The rookie quarterback started in the Ravens’ final two preseason games as Kyle Boller and Troy Smith were sidelined with a shoulder injury and a tonsil infection, respectively.

Midway through training camp, it looked as if the 18th overall selection in the 2008 National Football League Draft wouldn’t be a major factor in the three-way quarterback competition, but Flacco’s improved play and injuries to the other quarterbacks opened the door for him to become the starter.

In other news, ESPN is reporting that the Ravens signed quarterback Joey Harrington, a former first-round pick, to a one-year contract, indicating that Boller’s shoulder injury could be serious. Harrington was last seen in a Falcons uniform Thursday night, stinking up the joint against the Ravens in the two team’s final preseason game. It’s unclear if he would be given a chance to compete with Flacco for the starting job, but he could provide a veteran presence that will be lacking if Boller is sidelined for an extended period of time.

The future is now for Flacco and the Ravens. What does everyone think about Coach Harbaugh’s decision?

  1. How long until the Ravens sign Vick?

  2. Probably never. You know, considering that the NFL has suspended him indefinitely from the league and no team is publicly pressuring them to reverse their decision.

  3. And that he's in jail right now. That's kind of a bigger issue. Some team will sign him when he's eventually reinstated.

  4. Hah. Ohhhh yeah. Forgot about that.

  5. Did Harbaugh have a choice? This certainly isn't what he wanted to have happen but Kyle apparently can't play and Troy has had a ridiculously long tonsil infection so who's left? Joe's progress from snap to snap was certainly encouraging but facing 1st team defenses throwing complex schemes at him will be a different story.
