Fashioning the election

This year’s election has inspired some great graphic tee shirt designs. Who would have thought that presidential candidates could be a fashion muse?

A noticeable trend that emerges for the John McCain tees is that they’re a little boring — yea I said it. For the most part, the designs are dignified, but pretty dull. The idea of art enhancing a message seems to be missing, but then again, Sen. McCain isn’t seeking the youth vote. This might be the most interesting official McCain shirt I’ve seen. This hat is fun, too, I guess.

Barack Obama, on the other hand, has a slew of official tees on his website. A person could build a whole Obama wardrobe with the options on his online store. I believe this can be attributed to the sense that Sen. Obama has become a muse for the arts.  And fashion has been no exception. His website’s Runway to Change store has designs from Russell Simmons, Vera Wang, Zac Posen and Beyonce and Tina Knowles (my fav shirt yet). I also really love this Derek Lam tote bag. Of course, these all come with a heftier price tag. This “Got Hope” tank is a decent investment at $10.

Fashion isn’t an important aspect to the campaign issues, however, a tee shirt becomes a walking billboard of sorts. Freedom of speech is an important right, and if a young woman wants to wear her political views stretched across her breasts, then she should, no matter if it’s pro-McCain/Palin or pro-Obama/Biden. It’s American.

  1. Is there ANYTHING that Shepard Fairey WON'T silkscreen?

I think it's kind of lame that Obama's campaign "store" has become a digital yardsale of over-priced crap by mediocre designers.

  2. Check out the '(mc)Lovin' McCain' shirt on his daughter's website. I laughed out loud in my office.

That would make one hell of an ironic coke mirror.
