When Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave axeman Tom Morello donned an acoustic guitar, dubbed himself The Nightwatchman and released One Man Revolution in 2007, more than a few fans scratched their heads.
Accustomed to playing packed arenas in the ’90s, Morello discovered new passion in playing Billy Bragg-like lefty anthems to bar crowds; if populism begins in the rock ‘n’ roll pulpit, he found his calling.
‘The Fabled City’ is the second Nightwatchman album, and I’m wondering if you’re dovetailing off the first record, where you really empathized with the working man and average people. Are those some of the themes that emerge on this new record or are there some new ones?
Those are certainly themes that go through all my work, whether it’s writing lyrics or even playing guitar. This record, The Fabled City, is musically more expansive than One Man Revolution … I did the Justice Tour where I mixed my electric guitar playing with acoustic guitar playing and had a band as well. So when Brendan O’Brien and I were sitting down talking about this record we definitely wanted to bridge the gap between the Nightwatchman and the Daywatchman, sort of my work as a rock guitar player and my dark folky singer/songwriter.
With Brendan on the record and you playing electric guitar, are there solos or are the riffs based on electric guitar?
The record is all acoustic guitar-based, although I run the acoustic guitar through some of my electric guitar effects pedals to give it more of an edgy sound in some places and full band arrangements on a lot of the songs. …
You know I’m going to ask you about Rage Against the Machine. You’ve been doing some festivals this year; anything on the horizon?
We played a bunch of shows in Europe this year, overseas, the conventions, but no real plans beyond that. It’s likely next year we’ll play more shows; we had a great time doing it so it’s likely that will continue.
