Can We Get Through Thanksgiving and Christmas First?

A day after the presidential election a friend remarked to me, get ready for all the out of town people to fly in. I didn’t even need to ask for a clarification, I already knew exactly what she was talking about. She was referring to next January’s presidential inauguration. Weeks earlier friends of mine had scoped out hotels both inside and outside of the city. Many hotel rooms were already booked no doubt by the various politicos from either the Democratic or Republican parties who had money down that their candidate would prevail.

Last week I watched a report which talked about Maryland and Baltimore’s expected role in the inauguration, overflow capital.

It makes a lot of sense.

Maryland is close enough to D.C. that it isn’t an unreasonable drive or there’s always taking the train over from Penn Station.

We have a number of great hotels in the downtown area which are close to important and historic landmarks of their own.

Bringing it all together is the expectation that a trip to inauguration won’t be as expensive as it could be if one stays in Baltimore and commutes to the capital city.

I expect to be there one way or the other, as a journalist and an observer. I’m one of those who expects that my plans will fall into place sometime close to January.

In the meantime I’m also one of those asking can we get through Thanksgiving and Christmas first?

  1. I read all the DC hotels are booked already. I also heard of a Baltimore lady who's renting a room in her house for $800 including meals. I may just have to talk my wife into doing that. We have a nice place, finished basement... I'm sure we could pull $1000 easy... especially as it gets closer to the big day.
