Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon tells The Baltimore Sun that she is troubled by the recent rise in violence in the city.
I’m sure she isn’t the only one.
The Sun reports that thirteen people have been killed in the city during the last ten days, changing the lives of victims and perpetrators - and their families - forever.
There have also been several incidents of school violence including Friday’s stabbing death of 15-year old Markel Williams at William H. Lemmel Middle School and an attack yesterday on a city school teacher at Forest Park High School.
So, what’s behind the recent rise in violence and, more importantly, what can be done to stop it?
Some may argue that the added stress of the holiday season may cause some to act violently. It’s not a justification, but it could be a reason. Others may argue that parents’ failure to pay enough attention to their children has resulted in their inability to curb destructive behavior before it starts.
Aside from assigning blame, what can communities do to prevent future violence? Violence affects communities, so can communities working together with police and other government agencies ultimately stop the violence. Mayor Dixon constantly charges communities to work with young people to show them how to be productive members of society. Do you agree with her call to action?
