On The Radio

In the mornings on the way to work I try not to think about the office, except for the easiest route to take to get there. Come on, I know I’m not the only one. What need is there to think about the work to be done before it’s time? It’ll be there when you log onto the computer as will countless e-mail reminders. My way of passing time is seeing what’s on the radio. There’s not one particular morning show which I listen to though I generally enjoy those traditional morning shows which mix music, with news and views.
I like a lot of people like to hear morning show hosts that can connect the local, the national , even the international with real life and pop culture. Having been a college disc jockey and been at the hands of a much more discriminating audience, I know how hard that is to do a show mind you one which is traditionally four hours long.
During the morning drive more often than not I’d switch through about 5 or 6 Baltimore and D.C. radio stations to find something which would keep me engaged for the half hour drive to work. Often I’d stop the dial on 92.3. The voices of The Big Phat Morning Show Marc Clarke, Sonjay, and Porkchop. So I was surprised, shocked even when I heard the news that 92Q’s Big Phat Morning Show was being cancelled.
I was not one of those who had no clue that radio was changing. Earlier in the week CBS Radio’s WHFS switched from being a talk radio station to a sports talk radio station. I’d also read of cuts at XM Satellite Radio.
Still despite all the changes not being able to listen to the usual suspects in the morning definitely changes things.
Tomorrow morning Rickey Smiley is supposed to take over 92Q’s morning show slot. Having a syndicated morning show beamed in from somewhere else isn’t unusual. 95.9 has the Tom Joyner show. Still such same change will take some getting used to, and while I doubt Mr. Smiley is what I’m looking for. I know I can just change the dial to see what else is on the radio.

I still remember the day they switched HFS to EL ZOL lol.. I was in the middle of jamming out to "i believe it was a Smashing Pumpkins song" and there was dead air..then all of the sudden SPANISH it was crazy.. sad day for sure I dont know anything about 92q but im sure its listeners feel the same way I did when HFS went off the air.. even though its just ONE show and not the station itself.. im sure the show had a following

yeah... that threw me for a loop. I usualy listen to Anita Marks in the afteroon and one day it was just... gone. They advertised that the shows had moved... but never advertising the move as it was coming up... crappy.
I still listen to the morning show I listened to out in Arizona... ah, te power of the internet giving me a piece of home. They're a growing show and have broken some stuff on their show. JohnJay and Rich. They started in Tucsom, branched out to Phoenix and now are also in Portland, Or, Colorado Springs and Nothern Colorado. There's little music, just about all entertainment. They have everyday bits, like random trivia question for "Tired and braindead" and the "Remember the Time" where a montage of music, movies and other audio clues are played and 2 of the dj's and a caller each try to guess the year the clues are from.
Then there are the weekly bits.
Monday- "After this weekend I'll never do _____ again."
Tuesday- "Second date update" (usualy a girl calls, can't figure out why the guy stood her up for a 2nd date but likes the guy so the show calls the guy to find out why)
Wednesday- "Confession Wednesday" by far my favorite bit. People call and confess their sins for prizes. Some VERY crazy stuff (like the stripper who had sex and did drugs with the family priest)
Thursday- "War of the Roses" usually a girl suspects her mate (usually straight couples but they've done gay couples, too) is cheating. The show calls pretending to be a flower shop to find out who he'd send it to. Always fireworks. Ryan Seacrest basically admitted to stealing this for his L.A. morning show.
Friday's have random stuff and Mr. Moviefone calls in to review new movies.
They podcast everything so if you go to www.johnjayandrich.com you can check the show out. For us it plays from 7:30a-1pm.
If it sounds lik I'm pimping the show, well, I am... it's entertaining and makes the morning go by much smoother.
What's amazing is they have a TON of listeners onine around the country... from Florida and Chicago they've received calls from dedicated listeners. Pretty much all of them say that they don't have a show anything like JJ&R... and now I believe it.
