Neighbors’ Night Out 3

Most folks in Baltimore are familiar with the tragedy of Zach Sowers, a young financial analyst from Johns Hopkins who was attacked in June of 2007 by a group of teenagers.  They beat him into a coma and, nearly a year later, he died from his injuries.  The attack aroused the passions of the city, both good and bad, as debates raged over race, class, and punishment. Talk show switchboards lit up. Posts and threads flooded online forums.

And at the center of it:  Zach’s widow, Anna Cheng Sowers.  Her clashes with State’s Attorney Patricia Jessamy’s office (namely, spokeswoman Margaret Burns) over its handling of the case further exacerbated public opinion and inspired people to demand more from a broken justice system.

Today, the arguments have simmered to a slow burn, creating a soft backdrop for Anna Sowers’ newest role: health advocate.  She helped found the Zach Sowers Brain Trauma Research Fund at Johns Hopkins’ Neurological Critical Care Unit.  Its purpose is to fund research and education efforts to help people living with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

As part of the effort, an event will be held March 1 at Pazo, the trendy Fell’s Point fine dining destination.  Tickets are $75 per person and, thanks to the generosity of Pazo owners Cindy Wolf and Tony Foreman, 100% of the proceeds go directly to the fund.

If the lure of great food and great booze at a phenomenal price for a worthwhile cause doesn’t lure you, the guest list might.  Ace of Cake’s Duff Goldman.  Talk show hosts Ron Smith and Ed “The Commish” Norris.  And the original ass-kicker, Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa.

  1. I think they should have the kids that beat Zach at the party as well...as pinatas. I'll bring the baseball bats.

    !

  2. The kids are just half the problem. The legal system in Baltimore is dysfunctional. Latest studies show that the jury pool is too sympathetic to criminals and disturbingly erratic.

In over 13 years, I've never been picked to serve on an actual jury, so I can't speak from experience. Suppose my demo is unpalatable for defense attorneys ;)

  3. Lest we forget the pretty great piece done on Anna by CP in December - http://www.citypaper.com/news/story.asp?id=17227, which illustrates MMMMMMMMcdermott's points (and more) pretty thoroughly...

Ugh this story never ceases to make me angry in more than one way. Screw it, I'm broke but I'll be there.

  4. sigh - take out the ), for the link to work

  5. I fixed it. Works now, Ev.

  6. Ive never been even been sent a letter for Jury Duty! I guess my star power would be a distraction on the case..Ha Ha!!

  7. Hey Tim, are you registered to vote? If not, I suggest you do so -- the Jury Summons will follow eventually. I usually get a summons for Jury Duty at least once a year. I don't always have to report, and like M3, seldom get picked for an actual jury when I do report. The Jury Commissioner is supposed to be using the MD Driver's License rolls for calling jurors as well as the voter's rolls; however, everyone I know who is not a registered voter (not that many) have never been called for Jury Duty.

  8. Granny, yeah I heard that also! Everyone I know who votes gets called,I think I am not registering to vote then..Ha Ha!
