Meet the Local Blogger: Auni’s making sure the best of Bmore isn’t kept confidential

Inner Harbor {Thanks, The Baltimore Sun}
Inner Harbor {Thanks, The Baltimore Sun}

As a lifelong Baltimorean, it never ceases to amaze me how many visitors list the best thing about Baltimore as the Inner Harbor.

Yes, it’s a major attraction, but thankfully it isn’t nor should it be seen as the only spot to get a real sense of all that Baltimore has to offer.

Luckily there are bloggers like Auni Husted who work hard to make sure the best of Baltimore is highlighted.

Husted who recently returned from studying abroad is now once again unearthing some of Baltimore’s hidden charms.

Name and username: Auni Husted/blogspot username: aunihusted

Age: 21

Neighborhood in Baltimore metro: Remington

Blog url: I maintain a few, but of interest to b is my Baltimore happenings blog: http://charmcityconfidential.blogspot.com/

What’s your blog about? I try to let people know about upcoming events (mostly festivals, concerts, movies, etc.) and write about why I love Baltimore so much.

What’s your favorite thing about Baltimore? Baltimore is so real. It is hard to find a city that is more honest or genuine. Although it is a bit troubled, Baltimore has so much creative potential as well. There is a lot going on here right now– it’s exciting. And it truly lives up to its name of “Charm City”; it oozes character.

What’s your favorite restaurant? I particularly enjoy this small Indian grocery store/restaurant called Pawan, in Parkville.

A perfect day for you involves: Getting coffee at Common Ground, reading a good book on my porch, biking to Druid Hill Park and having a picnic with friends, and going to a movie at the Charles.

Your favorite song right now: Tough call, but probably “French Navy” by Camera Obscura.

Your favorite TV, radio or Internet show: I really don’t have one…

What publications or Web sites do you read daily: I try to read the Baltimore Sun on a daily basis. My favorite blogs are Pret A Voyager (also Baltimore-related) and Copenhagen Cycle Chic (I just spent four months in Copenhagen and it reminds me of the graceful cyclers of Denmark).

Why do you blog? I began blogging when I moved across the country to go to college (I’m from Seattle and go to Goucher), as a way to keep my family and friends up-to-date on what I was doing. I started my Baltimore blog because I wanted to try to motivate my peers to take advantage of all Charm City has to offer. I hate to hear people complain that there isn’t much to do because that is absolutely not true at all here!

What role does your blog serve? Hopefully, to connect curious Baltimoreans with some of the cool stuff in this city.

Who is your target audience? I suppose other Goucher (or area college) students.

How do you decide what’s blogworthy? I mostly write about what interests me, but I would love to have time to write more– to appeal to other people’s interests as well.

What’s the favorite blog post that you’ve written? Can’t say I have a favorite. I just like the ones that are chock-full of ideas for things to do.

Do you have a blog post you’ve ever wanted to unpublish but haven’t? Nope.

What’s the best thing you’ve read recently? I read “Microthrills” by Wendy Spero last weekend and I’m almost through my second David Sedaris book of the summer. They are both hilarious writers.

What are two things every Baltimoreans should do this summer? Hmmm, it’s difficult to name just two, but I’d say enjoy one of Baltimore’s great public parks (Druid Hill, Wyman Park and Patterson Park are my favorites) and go to any of the almost-weekly festivals. Art Scape is coming up in July– that is certainly a must-do.

  1. As a newcomer to Baltimore (little over 3 yrs.) I have developed a love for the city. My friends and relatives are amazed/amused at my knowledge of the city and it's history. In my spare time I love taking pictures of, what I call, "The Beauty of Baltimore". It's great when I can share pictures and info about the city that some of its lifelong residents don't even know.
