Yoshi
Breed: Shiba Inu
Age: Four months
Hometown: Parkville

We asked for photos of the prettiest pooches around Baltimore and you delivered. Yoshi had some stiff competition among the 230 dogs entered in the contest, but he made it to the round of the 32 (pictured on pages 12-13) in which thousands voted. Then readers voted him into the final four, where he earned the title of top dog by about 30 votes.

Yoshi’s family: Tim Jarrett, 29, and Lisa Jarrett, 25, of Parkville

They helped us get to know Yoshi — which is short for the Japanese name “Hideyoshi” — a little better via e-mail:

How do you feel about Yoshi being named “Baltimore’s Most Beautiful Dog”?
We could not be happier about the outcome! … We were so touched by the overwhelming amount of support shown by our friends and family during the contest.

What is special about Yoshi?
He loves being out in the rain and playing in streams, but get him near a pool or a beach and he freaks out!

How long have you had Yoshi?
Seven glorious and happy weeks.

What made you enter Yoshi in Baltimore’s Most Beautiful Dog contest?
We entered Yoshi in the contest, firstly because we honestly believe he is the most adorable dog we have ever seen … He is definitely a head-turner and a smile-creator!!! Yoshi has taught us to become much more social people with our neighbors as well as with people in our community.

What’s Yoshi’s favorite toy, treat or place to be?
His absolute favorite thing to play with is leaves. Let him stumble upon one fallen branch and he will be happy all day!

How did Yoshi become part of your family?
We had been looking for a puppy to add to our family, and only went into the store that day to look. He was the first and ONLY puppy we asked to see. We fell in love …

In addition to being featured on the cover of b, Yoshi and his family won a prize-filled basket from Doggie Style in Federal Hill.

  1. Bandit is the one!

  2. Dachshunds REPRESENT!
    ; - )

  3. Goldens Rule!!

  4. AAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWW

  5. it was SO hard to pick our 32 finalists.
We received more submissions than we could have ever anticipated.
but i tell you what. when your job one day is to look at hundreds or adorable puppies and try to pick the cutest ones, life ain't that bad.

  6. ADORABLE.

  7. Category D has all the prize winners in it.

  8. I'm sad to see you didn't pick the ACTUAL most beautiful dog in Baltimore. But I get to see him everyday, so it's your loss. :P

  9. i know how you feel.
i think my dog (who i couldn't enter for obvious reasons) could beat all of these pups.
she's pretty much the cutest thing ever.

  10. Go Bandit!!!!

  11. Voting doesn't end until Friday. You have four more days to vote!

  12. How do you vote I can't find any way to vote?

  13. I know what you mean. They certainly didn't make this contest easy.

  14. The poll software allows one vote per IP address. So if someone else in your house/family has voted on your computer, you wouldn't be able to vote on the same machine.

  15. I AM HEART BROKEN THAT THE MOST BEAUTIFUL DOG IN ALL OF BALTIMORE WAS NOT EVEN CHOSEN AS A FINALIST. MY SISTER'S PUPPY KOMORA IS ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE. SHE SHOULD HAVE WON HANDS DOWN.

  16. Panko is the "Best Looking" just look at him!!!

  17. cali

  18. I don't like the way contests like this are put together. We have to choose from groups of dogs someone choose for us. Why not use all the dogs entered and use process of elimination. Over half of these dogs have absolutely nothing unique about them. They're just normal looking dogs and are definitely not beautiful. Cash and Hoochie are the only dogs of all of these dogs that have any potential. If neither of them wins, this contest was a failure.

  19. having an overwhelming amount of entries, it would take an awful long time, a lot of space on the site and be fairly confusing if we used all of them.
this was the best way, after much thought and consideration (no, seriously), we could execute the contest.

  20. Sounds like you want something more like hot-or-not for dogs... In my opinion, barring a hot-or-not for dogs, the way that this contest is being run is the only manageable way. The only thing they could have done better was put NO voting "above the fold" and assign the dogs to categories randomly rather than alphabetically. Category D for example is much more competitive than B or C...

Also, I think it should be Baltimore's cutest dog... none of these dogs are particularly beautiful.

Though Didi, Jake, and Yoshi are certainly cute and Bella, Bandit, Domino, Holly, and Riese are certainly good to look at.

Cash and Hoochie certainly have the most professional looking photos. I think in just a "coolest photo" contest they would win.

All in all, this contest is just fun. Who can complain about looking at pictures of cute dogs and having fun watching which one is winning in the polls? Plus, what do they win? Get to be on the cover and some doggie toys? It's not like it's the lotto or something...

  21. True, this is a fun contest. And maybe next time The B decides to do this they can use categories, like small, large, puppies, and most unique. I just don’t understand why some of these dogs are finalists. How were they picked, who got to choose, and how were they judged?

  22. I agree. It would've been overwhelming to see all the dogs entered and then vote. However, I think categorizing would have been fair since you have older dogs vs. puppies and big dogs vs. small dogs.

  23. Hope someone is home because it is 5:48PM and people are still voting. What happened to voting ending at 5:00PM?

  24. There no question that some owners set up a network of friends/students/etc a week before voting to assure that their dog will win. The dogs who win each category are NOT the reader's choice--only the votes of friends who were networked before--or using some other person's password to vote!

b needs to correct their voting process next year!!

  25. I say "good on you" b-the-site for running a fairly reasonable contest. Voting was restricted by IP address to prevent massive manipulation of the system, but it wasn't locked down so much as to require folks to sign up to vote (which would have been a drag and much less fun). A good balance I think.

Though I do like murdertown's suggestion of having a "dog" contest and a "puppy" contest because, frankly, no dog can compete with some of these adorable puppies.

And if you are someone who mobilized your friend network to vote for your dog -- good on you too! Could there be anything more American than trying to convince your friends to vote for the guy (or in this case dog) that you support?

If anything -- that's probably the point of this! To bring more eyeballs to bthesite.com. I know I've checked it multiple times per day every day this week to watch the results when before I hardly ever visited the site!

  26. All are great dogs and congratulations to Bandit, Dublin, Mugatu, and Yoshi.

If Hootchie or Willis ever need a new home (which I doubt very much) they are welcome to live with me. Aw shucks, I'll take Milo and Lady too ... and Austin and Blink and Cali and Didi. Okay, I'll take all of them!!!!

  27. Cash was robbed.

it appears you are witness to the power of facebook networking for votes.

  28. My Pick is JAKE!
