Maryland Congressman John Sarbanes is expected to unveil a new loan forgiveness program geared at encouraging more young people to consider careers in public service.

The program could aide those who’d like to become teachers, health care professionals, civil servants, or public interest attorneys, but feel student loan debt might make those career options unrealistic.

Sarbanes authored legislation which put into place The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Option.

Also, First Lady Michelle Obama announced Monday over $12 million in funds to help community health centers here in the state of Maryland.

The funds will be used to construct, renovate, and repair over a thousand clinics nationwide.

With a growing unemployment rate, and the challenges posed to working families due to the economy, health care centers are now a critical part of providing health-care to those in need.

“Community Health Centers provide care to the Americans who need it most and their work has never been more important,” said Mrs. Obama. “These grants will help centers in Maryland serve more Americans who simply can’t afford insurance coverage anymore.”

Later today Maryland’s senior United States Senator Barbara Mikulski, Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger, and Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith are expected to announce federal funding for the county’s 911 center.

The call center takes nearly a million calls a year.

The funding is seen as a major investment in the county’s emergency response system.
