In May, I went to the Keane show at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington. I knew the UK trio’s singles, like “Everybody’s Changing” and “The Lovers are Losing,” so I thought it would be a good chance to catch some live music and drink a few beers. I didn’t expect to find the hardcore Keane fans filling the venue, singing along and cheering throughout the show.

It was an incredible set. Vocalist Tom Chaplin ran all over the stage, belting out the songs without missing a note. And at one point he stopped to marvel at the cheering crowd and to thank them for making it the best show on the tour. It was one of the first times I had ever seen such a charismatic lead singer be so humbled.

Chaplin, drummer Richard Hughes, and pianist Tim Rice-Oxley take over WTMD Thursday night to play some of their favorite artists. The list is Brit-heavy, but there are more than a few odd selections from a band that’s full of surprises.

Richard Hughes, drums:
•••• Bloc Party, “Mercury”
•••• The Wannadies, “Hit”
•••• Depeche Mode, “Enjoy the Silence”
•••• Hot Chip, “Ready For the Floor”

Tim Rice-Oxley, piano:
•••• Bat For Lashes, “Daniel”
•••• Morrissey, “Everyday Is Like         Sunday”
•••• K’NAAN, “I Was Stabbed By Satan”
•••• Ladyhawke, “Magic”

Tom Chaplin, vocals:
•••• Robyn, “With Every Heartbeat”
•••• Glasvegas, “Daddy’s Gone”
•••• Jeff Buckley, “Last Goodbye”
•••• Radiohead, “House of Cards”

Listen to the full Thursday Night Mix Tape with Tyler at 8 p.m. Thursday on 89.7 WTMD, listener-supported radio from Towson University. Check out WTMD online at wtmd.org
