Joshua James’ Build Me This is one of the most deeply personal and beautiful records released this year — so intimate, in fact, that I wasn’t sure it would translate live.

On a recent night at the 8×10, however, James’ voice wafted through the club as though the sound man had just pushed play.

The crowd was captivated when James’ band began thumping into “Coal War,” a standout from the new album. I was alongside local artist Mike McFadden, who had helped open the show, when he started singing along, adding his own harmonies from the crowd. And “Coal War” became one of those songs that stay with you long after the show.

James stops by WTMD at 8 p.m. Thursday to share some of the tracks that have inspired him. And whether you’re just discovering James or a longtime fan, you’ll be able to hear the artists in his incredible voice. Check out his mix tape after the cut.
