Ray Rice: Future Pro-Bowler? {thanks, THE BALTIMORE SUN}
We had a tasty sports smorgasbord in Baltimore again this week, with the Ravens steamrolling the Lions and the O’s filling out their roster. Who else made headlines?
[1] Three Ravens — LB Ray Lewis, FS Ed Reed and FB Le’Ron McClain — lead their positions in AFC Pro Bowl voting, but Ray Rice, the team’s most indispensable player this season, is fourth among AFC running backs. This is a crime, people. If not for the play of Rice, who all season has turned simple running plays and dump-offs from Joe Flacco into monster gains, Ravens fans would be worrying about draft position instead of a potential playoff berth. So log onto NFL.com and rock the vote. Unlike Lewis and Reed, who look to be going to South Florida (not Hawaii) based on their names alone, Rice has actually proved on the field that he deserves to be honored.
[2] Former Ravens coach Brian Billick, who led the team to its only Super Bowl title in 2001, will be calling Sunday’s game against the Bears for Fox. Lewis and his fellow players didn’t seem interested in answering questions on Billick, and coach John Harbaugh says he and Billick have a “great relationship.” But if you ask me, Billick hasn’t gone anywhere. His spirit lives on in those clever Coors Light commercials. “Go Ed! Go Ed!”
[3] The O’s continued their magical stopgap-signing tour, inking reliever Mike Gonzalez and 3B Garrett Atkins to short-team deals this week. Hey, at least they are finally addressing needs. I like the signing of Gonzalez, a slick lefty. But Atkins is nothing more than a one-year fix until Brandon Snyder and Josh Bell are ready for the show.
[4] There has been a lot of talk about Ravens LT Jared Gaither and RT Michael Oher swapping spots on the line. Hall-of-Fame tackle Jonathan Ogden supports the move, but not for this season. I’m with Ogden. Switching these guys during the playoff stretch is not a smart idea. In the offseason? Maybe. Although if Gaither can’t stay healthy enough to play, it’s a moot point, isn’t it?
[5] The Ravens will wear black jerseys Sunday for the first time this season, but they’ll be wearing white pants. Harbaugh doesn’t like the black-on-black unis. Sorry, for knocking your fashion sense, John, but the Ravens’ blackout look is sick.
[6] O’s great Brooks Robinson is getting a statue near Camden Yards that depicts him making a throw to first base. Perfect.
[7] Fourteen Olympic gold medals, the most ever, weren’t enough for Michael Phelps to be named AP’s athlete of the aughts (Tiger was No. 1)? What a joke.
[8] Troubled Bengals WR Chris Henry died Thursday after falling out of the back of a pickup truck during a fight with his fiancee. Sad news about a talented player who just could never seem to get it together.
[9] WR Chad Ochocinco wants to fight Chargers LB and former Terp Shawne Merriman over a Twitter beef. Chad has no chance, but I’d pay more to watch that than MMA.

Garrett Atkins is going to take care of some buisness this year! One Year Deal...dont be surprised if he uses a corked bat or what ever he needs to do. He wants a big contract....so he will be forced to go all out with the Orioles this year. Something we aint used to seeing! A Oriole who runs hard down the baselines...hopefully he can get a hold of Sammy Sosa...I heard he has some good prices on these corked bats lol! I expect him to mustard at least 35 clearance shots over the wall(Homeruns). The Orioles are legit like Mc Hammer!

Pretty reasonable to expect 35 home runs from a guy who never even did that playing half his games at Coors and whose power numbers have declined precipitously over the past three years.

Yeah your probally right Andrew...but I have to lie to myself once in a while and hold out hope that the Orioles will actually pick up a player who can hit. Some players perform better in different leagues, I hope its better for him in the AL...but who knows he might end up hitting like 8 homeruns.

Yeah, unfortunately the improvements usually happen when a player goes from the AL to the NL, not the other way around. I'm OK with Atkins as a stop-gap while we wait for Bell though.

Yeah your right about the league switch. I think the NL is more fastball pitchers. Usually NL players fare worst in the AL. But yeah either way, I cant wait to Bell is ready, I think he is going to be good.

I wouldn't be so quick to say Lewis and Reed are going based on name alone. Profootballfocus.com has Lewis graded the number two ILB and Reed the number on safety this year. I'll admit Reed's ranking really surprised me, so I don't blame you for that one, but just because Ray isn't as good as he was in his prime doesn't mean he's not still one of the best in the league.

i just realised its only a month and a half until spring training....and if the season was to begin tomorrow the ORIOLES would still be picked to finish last....even with their dollar store additions,..yup...welcome to the A.L.east home of the yankees, red sox, and 3 other major minor league teams

if the orioles were smart,...they would offer half price on tickets after every home loss...starting august 15th...this would cure the green seat plague effecting the yard in the summer....it would also come off as if the orioles management and sweeter peter actually cared.

ESPN is reporting that the Orioles are looking into a possible Adrien Gonzalez trade.. The Red Sox have been trying to get him, but Jed Hoyer left the Sox for the Padres, so he KNOWS which players are good and which are smoke screens so he is asking for the farm. The Orioles are the only other team in the league who HAVE the prospects to land him.. which bothers me a bit.. I would be down for a Gonzalez to Balt trade, ONLY if Balt immediately traded Gonzalez to Boston for Clay Buchholz and some magic beans

Also I just saw that the Nationals JUSt picked up Jason Marquis... They are very quietly becoming a SOLID team.. the Orioles are definitely in jepordy of losing some fans to the Nats this season.
