Get it right this time: If they correct four Week 4 mistakes, Ravens could win rematch with Patriots
by Matt Vensel | January 7, 2010 at 4:00 pm
Posted in Ravens, b the paper, sports

Maybe if Joe Flacco doesn’t pass as much, this won’t happen… {thanks, The Baltimore Sun}
The Ravens (9-7) on Sunday face the difficult task of beating the Patriots (10-6) in frigid Foxborough, Mass., in the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs. The Patriots have an 8-0 record at home this season, with one of those wins coming against the Ravens, 27-21, in Week 4.
As if you could forget about a painfully close game like that.
The Ravens don’t seem to be taking much solace in that they could have (and maybe should have) beaten the Patriots the last time around if not for a few critical mistakes.
“Close doesn’t work in nothing but horseshoes and hand grenades,” wide receiver Derrick Mason said. “So, it didn’t help a lot at all. We can just go in there and hope that we make the best of every opportunity that we get and that we don’t allow opportunities to slip by us this time.”
Missed chances cost the Ravens the last time around, but if they can shore up these four faux pas from that early October loss, they’ll be in good shape to advance Sunday:
Wide receivers can’t drop the ball
It’s easy to say that the Ravens would have won the last meeting had wide receiver Mark Clayton not dropped a very makeable fourth-down catch in the game’s final minutes. But there’s no guarantee the Ravens would have finished off the drive with the winning touchdown had he made the catch. Either way, Clayton told The Baltimore Sun, he’ll be ready when called on Sunday. “If we need a play in the game, throw it to me,” he said.
It may come down to that if the Patriots take away Mason like they did in Week 4. Mason had one catch for 11 yards after catching six passes for 77 yards and a touchdown on the Ravens’ opening drive. “They kind of wised up,” he said. “They switched things up. … They forced other guys to beat them.”
Should New England blanket Mason again, another wide receiver must step up for the Ravens, whether it’s Clayton, Demetrius Williams, Kelley Washington or even David Tyree. Someone will have to do it.
Be on their best behavior versus Brady
The last matchup drew national attention for questionable calls that went against the Ravens. The Ravens were flagged nine times for 85 yards. The most dubious calls were two costly roughing the passer penalties after a little lobbying from Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.
This week, Brady joked that he hopes the fabled “Brady rules” are in effect Sunday. “Oh, I’m begging for preferential treatment if they’ll give it to me,” Brady said. “I just don’t think they’ll give it to me all the time. So I’m trying to butter up to those officials before the game and during the game so that we do get a call once in a while. If it helps our team win, I’m all for it.”
There’s no better way to knock the smile off Brady’s face than with a fierce, flag-free hit or two. And if the Ravens do get flagged, they’ve got to keep their cool and keep coming after him. “You’ve got to just play football,” linebacker Jarret Johnson said. “You can’t worry about the penalties.”
Don’t go too wacko with Flacco
When the Ravens were in the midst of their pass-happy stage early in the season, they asked quarterback Joe Flacco to throw a career-high 47 passes against the Patriots. He handed off just 16 times. Sure, Flacco played pretty well, connecting on 27 of his throws for 264 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but throwing that much is not exactly a recipe for success — especially in the playoffs.
Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron would be wise to stick with the Ravens’ fifth-ranked rushing attack this time around. “It doesn’t matter to me who I’m handing the ball off to, really,” said Flacco. “It’s just a matter of what they do with it afterwards.”
Rice, who was elected to his first Pro Bowl after racking up more than 2,000 yards for scrimmage, and Willis McGahee, who ran for 167 yards and three touchdowns against the Raiders, aren’t likely to run wild over the Patriots’ 13th-ranked run defense. But they should be able to move the chains, eat the clock and open up opportunities for Flacco downfield when they do call his number.
Eliminate Randy Moss from the game plan
The Ravens did a decent job of stymieing the Patriots’ 6-foot-4 speedster on Oct. 4. With cornerback Domonique Foxworth matched up on him for most of the game, Moss recorded just three catches for 50 yards and a score. It must be noted, though, that Brady and the Patriots offense were still working off some rust after Brady missed most of 2008 with a serious knee injury.
Brady and Moss have since gotten in rhythm, and Moss finished 2009 with 83 receptions for 1,264 yards and 13 touchdowns. And with super slot receiver Wes Welker out with a knee injury, Brady will lock onto Moss even more than usual.
That means Foxworth will have to lock onto Moss, too, and put forth another strong effort. “I felt really good about how I played him last time,” Foxworth told The Baltimore Sun. “It was good to have that experience against a guy like that.”
Another way to shut down the Brady-to-Moss connection is to get after Brady. “If you just let him stand there, he’s going to kill you,” Johnson said. “He’s definitely a guy that you’ve got to put pressure on.”
Just remember to keep it clean, guys.

No...No...No....lol! Matt...you predicted the Patriots will win! Are YOU sure you dont want to change your mind? I have to give props to Krista and Super fan...for picking the Ravens. It was funny Matt...I actually predicted to people at my job...YOU would be wrong on Ravens predictions...every game in the playoffs. Next week...you will take the Colts...and be wrong again!
And for this story..Clayton says...he wants the ball in a critical situation...didnt he already get the ball in a critical situation in New England Mark? Believe it or not, but I am always correct...Matt, you havent lived in Baltimore long enough to see that Ray Lewis is a different player in the playoffs...he can win you a Championship...remember last year..he knocked off that Titans helmet..RAY dont PLAY playoff time.
At least you aint the only one who picked the Patriots...maybe you and sawxfaninmd...can down some beers at the local bar..as you2 are SAD..that the Patriots got beat bad. Ravens 24 Pats 10

Tim, I love how you act like it's totally ridiculous that I picked the Patriots to win. First off, they're the favorites in this one, so it shouldn't shock you that one of us picked them. Second, they are 8-0 at home this year, have a 5-0 career record against the Ravens and have a Hall-of-Fame coach, QB and wide receiver (yes, even with Welker out, they still have Moss).
I went back and forth on who I think will win this one. My gut was telling me that this is the kind of game the Ravens could win. I could very easily see the Ravens make this an ugly one and stunning the Patriots. But logic says the Pats will win -- and it will be very close. Remember, the Ravens have struggled in close games, they're 3-5 on the road and, here's the biggie, they're 1-6 against playoff teams.
And in regards to your comment about me not being in Baltimore long enough to appreciate Ray Lewis, I've been watching football my whole life. You don't think I saw Ray play before I moved to Baltimore a few years ago? That's just silly. In fact, even though I'm not a Ravens fan and in 2001, I had no idea that I wanted to do this for a living, I could tell you exactly where I was when the Ravens won the Super Bowl. So yes, I've had my eye on Ray, the best middle linebacker of this generation and maybe any generation.
January 8th, 2010 at 1:49 pm | Please log in to reply. | Log in to rate this comment | report this comment
Yes RAY is the perhaps the best middle linebacker to ever play. I honestly think the KEY for us to winning is our pash rush. IF...and I will be honest IF we can put pressure on Brady we win...if not then your and everybody else on here's prediction will be correct.

The pass rush is key, but Ray isn't a pass rusher, Tim, so he isn't likely to be a factor in that department. He's pretty much just a run stuffer at this point (a darn good one).

Yeah vampinout...I think Welker being out..is bad news for them. They may get 2 TD's, but I think we beat them by 14.

Tim you DO realize that Ravens games are televised outside of Baltimore right? that makes no sense
You are awful sure of yourself, Im actually starting to get worried about you, I may have to have the suicide hotline on standby for you after Sunday's game... I'm not sure I'm comfortable with you being alone if they lose... it seems like you revolve around this win, and I hate to tell you but it will be a tough game for them to beat.. Ray Ray is on the front page of the Boston globe sports section online this morning.. its a good article..check it out

Thanks for the heads-up on the Boston Globe article, I will check...check...check it out! I feel sorry for YOU sawxfaninmd...you actually really think your team will win. Wes Welker is out...eliminating your odds to be eliminated! Do me a favor Sawxfaninmd..after the game...you and them Patriot fans...try not to get locked up. That Bar is going to be a mad house!

Eliminating your odds to be eliminated.... This means they're odds to be eliminated are non existant meaning the Pat's will win...
You heard it hear first people... Tim Lumber is betting against the Ravens... Some fan you are... You are a real Benedict Arnold.

Hey, I will be honest sawxfaninmd...anything can happen. Yeah YOU all have a good chance of winning. I just dont think this is the same Patriots team. I mean, if the the Ravens played the Jets, and Dolphins 2 times a year, our record would be pretty good. We play the Steelers and Bengals. Ray Lewis takes over in the playoffs...this Sunday will be NO different!

You had a TV as a kid Matt and sawxfaninmd...where did you 2 grow up at? Yeah, I had one also. BUT why I say that is...because unless you watch a team every week...then you dont know that team fully. I do admit YOU all know this years team 100%...but just like always in playoff time..we will step it up...unless we are playing them Steelers...which we aint...we will WIN!

Fandom is not a factor with any of these guys, Tim. The Patriots and Eagles are not rivals of the Ravens. They're just giving their two cents.
And I'm not a fan of any team at this point (and I mean it). I get paid to commentate on football for a living. That's my job.

the Pats have not lost to the Ravens since the Baltimore franchise was founded in 1996. The Pats are 5-0 against the team they will host in the first round of the playoffs at Gillette Stadium

The Eagles and Ravens aren't rivals. They've played two, three, maybe four times.
I think Jordan Bartel is kind of a Chargers fan, Tim. He's from the San Diego area. Want to talk smack on him because of that big geographical rivalry, too?

Jordan Bartell a Chargers fan? What the heck? It seems like the whole B staff does NOT root for the Ravens? AND speaking of the Eagles....we have NO grudge against them. We respect them. When we were trying to get an expansion team years ago...the Redskins kept us from getting a team. The first team to VOTE for us...and support us was the Eagles. So we like the Eagles...we are the Top Birds of the NFL.

I'm a huge Ravens fan but also an intelligent football fan. I hope I'm wrong but logic tells me
Patriots 23, Ravens 17.
Our secondary can't cover average receivers. Flacco isn't picking up blitzes and the receivers aren't getting open which is resulting in too many sacks. Our only hope is to pound the ball and keep Brady off the field.

Then come Tuesday YOU can all once again make a fool of yourself and ride the Peyton Manning bandwagon...you will hop off of Bradys come Monday. But the fact is the Colts will be rusty..and once again the Ravens will ride the momentum...all the way to Miami!

Yes they did blackwoffvii! Matt V, Wesley Case, Michael Smith, sawxfaninmd, yaknowmay...was I correct about the Ravens? Dont go switching the subject to the Colts....just yet! Give me and John Lee Roy Linde our props!
Hop on board the Ravens bandwagon...last stop is Miami. Flacco's Birthday is saturday in Indianapolis! He gets a Birthday present by beating the Colts! This week you all will take the Colts...take my advice....Ravens get another upset victory. But in the meantime...give me my props...admit I was right...you all were wrong! I told you so...you all bash me...well who was right...ME...I know my sports!

Congrats Tim Tim...as always, you are the man.
Respect to Matt for stepping up and acknowledging the win right away. Now where's the rest of the cohort that owes Tim a fist bump for calling it correct from the get go?
!

The BIG PICTURE...well the Colts will be eliminated this Sunday...so that picture is wrong also. Do I have to prove YOU all wrong again? Take the Colts..ride the bandwagon...to another LOSS! So YOUR Super Bowl predictions are wrong also!
