Tina Fey shines as Sarah Palin — again — on “Saturday Night Live” (thanks, AP}

From today’s b, the paper

It’s starting to feel like Tina Fey is running for vice president.

Fey again returned to “Saturday Night Live” to play Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin as the show continued to pull out all the stops in its election year season. Queen Latifah portrayed debate moderator Gwen Ifill, and cast member Jason Sudeikis stepped into the role of Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden.

Betting on Tina Fey as a comic queen

With our focus firmly on trash-talking and all-ins, there’s very little that will tear my friends and me away from the table on the rare occasion that we’re able to get together for a poker game. (And we’re only playing for brownies, I swear, officer.)

So it was evidence of a true pop culture/national affairs moment when the activities came to a screeching halt, the Cubs got booted off the TV playing silently in the background and we rushed into the living room to see how “Saturday Night Live” and Tina Fey would skewer Thursday night’s Biden-Palin debate. As MSNBC reports, “SNL’s” ratings Saturday night grew 23 percent over last week, likely in response to viewers who – like my pack of friends – knew the veep debate would serve Fey material like meat on a platter. Even the clip of the skit on NBC’s Web site rang up about 1.6 million views as of late Sunday night.

From today’s b, the paper

The federal Copyright Royalty Board on Thursday left the royalty that songwriters receive on sales of CDs and digital downloads at 9.1 cents per song for the next five years.
Both songwriters and music sellers applauded the ruling — but for different reasons. Apple Inc., which had threatened to shutter its iTunes store if the rate increased, appeared to have scored a clear win.

When Michael Phelps left his mother’s house in Rodgers Forge four years ago, he was — despite his six gold medals and his 19 years on Earth — still a boy in almost every sense.

Last week, he returned to Baltimore a 23-year-old man, not to his mother’s house in Baltimore County but to a condo in Fells Point that he bought for $1.7 million. In addition to eight more gold medals, he’s brought with him a longing for what he once left behind: family, old friends, NFL football and the familiar sound of Baltimore accents.

He concedes life will be different. How different, he isn’t sure. Read the rest of this entry »

Bow brings out vote

Bow Wow once thought politics was only for “old folks,” but the 21-year-old rapper said he’s had a change of heart and wants other young people to vote.

“I used to think going to the mall and hollering at girls (was) more important,” he said. “But in reality, we are in a different time now. My focus now is to take it a step further to make a change and vote.”
