From today’s b, the paper

First things first: Maryland is not a “skiers’ paradise” and it never will be.

Our area, frankly, pales in comparison to the Rocky Mountain highs of the West. Utah, with its very appropriate “Ski Utah” license plate, is a big f-u to all other states containing snowy mountains. It kind of intimidates us. We also can’t match the picturesque slopes of the Northeast (a hazard: navigating through the New Hampshire stoner skiers).

But, don’t fret. There are still plenty of nice winter sport getaways within driving distance. Check out our picks below. Since money is tight, we’re assuming you’ll just make this a day trip — and ticket prices reflect that.

Have fun, snow bunnies:

Golden Globe Awards
Forget who wins. This is “Hollywood’s biggest party,” which means they serve alcohol, unlike those teetotalers over at the Oscars. So it’s your yearly chance to see Jack Nicholson leer at too-young females. Watch out, cast of “Gossip Girl.” 8 p.m. Sunday, NBC. {Jordan Bartel, b}

FedEx BCS National Championship Game
No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 2 Florida were the winners of the nationwide popularity contest to determine who would get to play for the national title. You might not think the Sooners and/or the Gators deserve to be there, but regardless, it’s going to be a good one. 8 p.m. Thursday, Fox. {Matt Vensel, b}

Lil Wayne {thanks, AP}
Lil Wayne {thanks, AP}

From today’s b, the paper:

This week’s 10 Spot recommendations for you:

Lil Wayne ‘I Am Music’ Tour
Lil Wayne and co. hit Washington’s Verizon Center on Tuesday. After his incredible 2008, Weezy is on his victory lap. I’ve seen Wayne in concert twice and left satisfied not only because he’s a gifted performer but also because his extensive catalog keeps the show brisk and fun. T-Pain, Gym Class Heroes are also on the bill. {Wesley Case, b}

1. Stoop Storytelling Holiday Hoopla
Not too many events bring together Mayor Dixon, Mary Alice from “Ace of Cakes” and “Wire” actress/dancer Maria Broom. Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall is holding this holiday show, where writers, a cartoon legend, the mayor and a reality show star share their personal stories with us. You can dish on Chef Duff, Mary Alice. I won’t tell. 8 tonight. $20. {Marissa Richardson, b}

2. Fall Out Boy, ‘Folie a Deux’
The Chicago four-piece’s populist approach to songwriting has culminated in its new album, Folie a Deux. If you can separate the band from blowhard Pete Wentz and his obnoxious tendencies, you’re left with saccharine hooks courtesy of lead singer Patrick Stump. Pharrell and Lil Wayne have cameos. {Wesley Case, b}

true gift The MICA Art Market
MARYLAND INSTITUTE COLLEGE OF ART
The best presents aren’t card-shaped, found at every mall or sitting at places ending in “mart.” A better shopping bet is Maryland Institute College of Art’s sale. Held from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. today-Saturday, it features one-of-a-kind paintings, stationery, T-shirts and jewelry (among other goods) designed and made by more than 200 MICA students, faculty and staff. Some student-designed items to look out for: Kerry Cesen’s handmade skateboard designs (above) and custom paintings on aerosol cans and Julia Kostreva’s clockwork earrings and charms. Brown Center’s Leidy Atrium and Falvey Hall lobby, 1301 Mount Royal Ave. Free. mica.edu/artmarket.

‘One Man Star Wars Trilogy:’ The force is with Charles Ross

From today’s b, the paper

The force must be with Charles Ross.

It’s pretty much the best explanation of the non-stop success of his “One-Man Star Wars Trilogy.” Ross plays all the interstellar characters, re-creates the landmark effects and even sings (!) the music. Ross, who originated the officially George Lucas-approved show in Canada in 2001 and also does a one-man “Lord of the Rings” trilogy show, fits in all the first three “Star Wars” films into one hour.

Yes, just the first three, so, thankfully, we’re sparred the memory of Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen’s distinct lack of chemistry. It premieres tonight at Center Stage and runs through Dec. 21. Ross put down his lightsaber long enough to chat with us.

Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, thanks Focus Features

From today’s b, the paper

‘Milk’
When Gus Van Sant isn’t guest-starring on “Entourage,” he actually directs films — pretty good ones at that. His biopic of Harvey Milk (played by Sean Penn), the first openly gay man elected to U.S. public office, hits theaters on Friday. With the recent Prop. 8 decision in California, it’s a pertinent subject that should resonate with audiences. {Wesley Case, b}

Dollar days
On Saturday and Sunday, you pay $1 (or less) to get into long list of Baltimore places, including Sports Legends, the American Visionary Art Museum and the National Aquarium. For a complete list, go to godowntownbaltimore.com. {Alisia Krastel, b}
