The Orioles’ new clothes were unveiled Wednesday at a much-anticipated fan rally at the Inner Harbor. Hundreds turned out to watch Orioles royalty of past and present strut their stuff in their shiny new road jerseys. Finally, fans got the big change they’ve been clamoring for.

Pardon me for thinking that’s a little foolish.

After 11 straight losing seasons and counting without coming remotely close to a postseason appearance, fans should want more than just superficial wardrobe changes.

They should be demanding a winning baseball team. Read the rest of this entry »

A nefarious new list is out, and it’ll have some Orioles fans cringing.  Pop news site Nerve announced its countdown of the 30 sluttiest athletes of all time, and Hall of Famer Jim Palmer has landed on it.  Ranked at a modest #27, Palmer is featured in one of his famous Jockey ads, wearing his baseball glove - and little else.

Since the Ravens aren’t taking the field on Sunday, a forgotten team takes the top spot on this weekend’s list. And you can bet some of the Ravens will be on their couches watching these games, and you should be, too. Read the rest of this entry »

Taking My Swings: Andy MacPhail’s offseason to-do list

Andy MacPhail’s job isn’t easy. The Orioles’ president of baseball operations was tabbed with the precarious task of turning one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball into a World Series contender.

In his first year and change on the job, MacPhail made some major moves, dealing two of his biggest stars (Erik Bedard and Miguel Tejada) for a hot-shot young centerfielder (Adam Jones), a pistol-toting, bible-reading slugger in left field (Luke Scott), an All-Star closer (George Sherrill) and a handful of pitching prospects with arms apparently made out of clay. You win some, and you lose some.

Still, MacPhail’s tenure atop the Orioles has to be considered a success. But to keep the positive momentum going, here’s what he needs to do this offseason: Read the rest of this entry »

1. Orioles vs. Blue Jays
Another losing baseball season in Baltimore comes to a close this weekend, but the talented young Orioles had plenty of bright spots this year. Let them know you’re still behind them. Even Ramon Hernandez. Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Camden Yards. {MATT VENSEL, B}

Ballplayer tries to follow Ripken’s path to Camden Yards

From today’s b the paper…

Like pretty much every single Little Leaguer raised in Baltimore Orioles territory during the ’80s and ’90s, Brian Conley grew up idolizing Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr. He had an Orioles jersey, hat, baseball cards and pennants. And he relished family trips to Camden Yards to watch his favorite team and player take the field.

“[Ripken] played the game the right way and he played it well,” said Conley, a former standout on Towson University’s baseball team. “Just as an Orioles fan, he was definitely an idol for me.”

Now the 6-foot-2 utility player has an opportunity to one day wear the same Baltimore uniform Ripken wore back in the day as a young Conley looked on from the Camden Yards bleachers in admiration. The 22-year-old Gaithersburg native was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 17th round of the Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft in June. When the calm and collected professional baseball newbie saw his name flash up on a computer screen as the latest pick by the Orioles, he was excited, but his reaction was subdued. He knew he was going to get drafted, and he knew the Orioles were interested. Read the rest of this entry »
