Oh, “News of the World.” You just delight in ragging on Michael Phelps, don’t you?

The British tab that brought the world the infamous bong photo also apparently tried to entice the father of one of the “Slumdog Millionaire” stars into selling his daughter. Now, it’s taking a mean-spirited tack in chronicling the not-so-shocking alleged details of Phelps’ bachelor life, at least as recounted by a woman said to a Baltimore stripper name Theresa White:

In his first interview since a photo of him presumably smoking marijuana was published in a British tabloid, Michael Phelps told The Baltimore Sun Wednesday that the past week has been both embarrassing and uncomfortable for him, and that he “clearly made a mistake.”

“It’s obviously bad judgment and it’s something I’m not proud of at all,” Phelps said. “I will say that with the mistakes that I’ve made in my life, I’ve learned from them. Every one of them. And I’ve become a better person. That’s what I plan to do from here. It’s definitely not what I wanted, and it’s clearly not what my mom wanted.”

The 23-year-old Rodgers Forge native spoke with The Baltimore Sun for close to 10 minutes after finishing up his daily practice at Meadowbrook Athletic Club, with no media handlers present and no questions said to be off limits. He said he realizes that his actions seem that much more foolish considering this is his second public slip-up. In 2004, at age 19, he was arrested for driving under the influence and received 18 months probation.

When asked if he is a regular marijuana smoker, Phelps said he was not.

“This was stupid, and I know this won’t happen again,” he said. Read the rest of this entry »

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Michael Phelps could face criminal charges as part of the fallout from a photo that surfaced showing the swimmer smoking from a marijuana pipe at a University of South Carolina house party.

A spokesman for Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, who was known for his tough stance on drugs, said on Tuesday the department was investigating.

“Our narcotics division is reviewing the information that we have, and they’re investigating what charges, if any, will be filed,” said Lt. Chris Cowan, a spokesman for agency.

The photo first shown in British tabloid News of the World on Sunday was snapped during a November party while Phelps was visiting the university, according to the paper.

Phelps, 23, and his team have not disputed the photo’s accuracy. Phelps has issued a public apology, acknowledging “regrettable” behavior and “bad judgment” after the photo appeared.

One of Phelps’ agents, Drew Johnson, said Tuesday authorities had not contacted the swimmer. “So we really can’t speculate,” he said. Read the rest of this entry »

Alas, Phelps, 23, didn’t get the ultimate sexy award. Hugh Jackman was dubbed this year’s sexiest man alive and graces the cover. But a photo of a waterlogged Phelps (shirtless, of course — it’s in his contract) is now on people.com, along with an excerpt from the Phelps feature.

Phelps, who now calls Fells Point home, tells People he doesn’t really notice female attention. “I don’t think of myself as a sex symbol,” he said. “My mom is by far the most important woman in my life.”
