The American dream of redemption and a gold medal in men’s basketball came true in Beijing, but there’s one silly notion that people need to get out of their heads: Just because they won the gold medal doesn’t mean they should be compared to the Dream Team.
Since the United States reclaimed its throne as the king of international basketball to emphatically punctuate the end of the 2008 Summer Games, sports writers across the country have participated in token debates to argue which team would win if the players had a time machine and a vested interest in tipping off against each other. Enough with these ridiculous comparisons. There’s nothing to debate here. Kobe ain’t Jordan, LeBron ain’t Magic, Carmelo ain’t Barkley, and this ain’t the Dream Team.
