From today’s b, the paper

Affectionately known as B Free Pillow {thanks, Brian Krista}

Ben Pillow, 33, Mount Washington

How we know him: Ben Pillow used to be production editor for b, before moving back to the interactive side of things at The Baltimore Sun.

A favorite 10 spot: “G. Love’s secret to success has always been a sound that mixes blues rock, hip-hop and funky acoustic rhythms. Or maybe it’s just the Special Sauce,” he wrote when the band was here in August.

Strange but true: “I’m a fraternal twin, and we have the same dreams sometimes.”

Best perk: “I got to go to the Belmont Stakes on b’s tab and watch Big Brown lose miserably.”

What a cute couple {thanks, Brian Krista}

Damon and Dayle Fyock, 31 and 27, Owings Mills

How we know them: Damon and Dayle Fyock are the married couple rooting for different football teams in the December cover story “Love/hate relationship.”

What they said then: ““There’s only two days a year when we don’t like one another. You know what days those are,” said Dayle.

Steelers fan on the way: “ Damon has [soon to be born daughter, Lucy’s] ultrasound picture already in a frame that says ‘Born to be a Steelers Fan’.”

What they say now: “I got picked on my Baltimore fans since he had the ball and I was trying to strip it. They thought it should have been the other way around,” Dayle says.

What he said then: “The best tattoo artist is one dedicated to their craft. They learn from each experience, growing from each one.”

Strange but true: “I have two different colored eyes. One is brown and one is green.”

What he says now: “I got a great response when the edition of b came out with me on the cover. Friends were calling the shop and congratulating us on the great publicity. We had the issue mounted on a plaque and we display it proudly in our lobby.”

Former b designer, Andrew Schaefer {thanks, Brian Krista}
Former b designer, Andrew Schaefer {thanks, Brian Krista}

Andrew Schaefer, 23, Perry Hall

How we know him: Andrew was a designer/editor at b before moving on to greener (but less fun) pastures. He still defends his Terps and comments on bthesite.com

What he said then: “I wouldn’t really say I miss anything. The show is perfect as is, and I can (and will) re-watch and experience the greatness all over again any time I want to,” he said about “The Wire” in the March cover story “Still Wired”

Strange but true: “b rescued me from impending unemployment after its own parent company laid me off from another of its papers.”

His fave memory: “I would have to say election night. The combination of excitement, pressure and tension was just awesome. Not something I’d want to do every night, but it’s something I’m glad I got to experience before leaving the news business.”

Bthesite.com blogger Chris Nelson {thanks, Chris}

Chris Nelson, 22, Baltimore

How we know him: Chris Nelson blogs about the good, the bad and the ugly side of Baltimore on bthesite.com.

Blogging faves: “My favorite blogs are my “Washington Week” compilations, and I’m enjoying the challenge of finding bloggers for “Meet The Local Blogger,” he says.

Strange but true: “I fainted the day of my senior prom due to dehydration, and begged doctors to let me out in time.”

What he says now: “My colleagues at my day job have taken to making fun of me. Their favorite saying is “Go blog about it,” yet those losers never give me anything blogworthy.”

Truly, truly outrageous G.E.M. {thanks, Brian Krista}

The Get Em Mamis, est. 2006, Catonsville

How we know them: G.E.M., also known as Fallon “Roxzi” Diane, 23, and Deenah “Symph” Eaton, 24, are the hip-hop divas featured in the June cover story “Hip-hop Mamis.”

What they said then: “Back then, the only mushy stuff we’d write about were the mushy brains on the street left by gunshots,” said Symph.

Strange but true: “We break out into random singing to converse, and this can go on for hours .”

What they say now: “Since our b cover, we have been more recognized in Baltimore. We could walk down the street before and no one would know who we were, and that has changed.”

From today’s b, the paper

Thanks, Farajii!
Thanks, Farajii!

Farajii Muhammad, 29, Randallstown

How we know him: Farajii Muhammad told his side in the October cover story “Race and Gen Y: Are we colorblind?”

What he said then: “If my generation chooses not to perpetuate this madness any longer, and be truthful about how we got here and where we are, then I believe the future will be bright.”

Strange but true: “I can’t eat a meal if the food is on the plate [and] doesn’t look neat and well proportioned. If the food looks sloppy and too much, then I won’t eat it.”

What he says now: “A lot of people read the article and thought our essays were good. Others said they wished other races were included in the piece. I understand that perspective because the election of President Obama was significant to the whole world.”

Thanks, Rae!

Rae Ricketts, 20, Abingdon

How we know her: Rae Ricketts regularly gives her take on various stories in b.

What she said then: “As a country we need change — hopefully it’s good change — which I have faith it will be,” she said about Barack Obama’s inauguration in January.

Strange but true: “I am a color junkie. I change my hair every month depending on my mood.”

What she says now: “I love writing to this paper because it makes me feel like I’m a part of something bigger than myself. It’s good to get out your veiws for other people to read and realize what other people think.”
